Could you help me to cope with my stress when it comes to my parents?

I struggle to come to terms with my relationship with my parents. They have their own conflicts as a retired couple of 30 + years. On top of that, since I was young, I often found it difficult to meet their expectations. I studied in the UK since age 13, and have been living and working in London since I left uni. But now even at age 33, I still find it difficult to have conversations with them; I may have problems I am dying to share but my experience of their responses when I was young stopped me being honest with them at all. The constant inner conflict made me simply distance myself from either of them and it's giving me enormous guilt; but at the same time I find it extremely difficult to pick up the whatsapp call when they ring. The enormous fear and dread that I felt every time is weighing on me. I know this is unhealthy and I now admit that I simply cannot tackle this on my own. I need external help to build strategies to identify the source of my fear and hopefully find ways to reconnect without feeling so much... fear.

Hello,

I am glad that you reached out. I am sorry to hear about your concerns in regards to your relationship with your parents. It sounds like you have started to have some boundaries but would like more healing and support in regards to this situation.

Do your parents continue to place their expectations on you? Healthy boundaries are very important to good mental health. A lack of boundaries will affect your relationships with others, and also impact the way that you feel about yourself. Many people are raised to believe that it is selfish to consider their own needs, and so struggle with healthy boundaries.

Have you ever had therapy in the past? Therapy can be an effective treatment for a host of mental and emotional problems, including reducing feelings of anxiety and improving relationships. Talking about your thoughts and feelings with a supportive person can often make you feel better. It can be very healing, in and of itself, to voice your worries or talk about something that’s weighing on your mind. And it feels good to be listened to—to know that someone else cares about you and wants to help. While it can be very helpful to talk about your problems to close friends and family members, sometimes you need help that the people around you aren’t able to provide. When you need extra support, an outside perspective, or some expert guidance, talking to a therapist or counselor can help. While the support of friends and family is important, therapy is different. Therapists are professionally-trained listeners who can help you get to the root of your problems, overcome emotional challenges, and make positive changes in your life. You don’t have to be diagnosed with a mental health problem to benefit from therapy. Many people in therapy seek help for everyday concerns: relationship problems, job stress, or self-doubt, for example. Others turn to therapy during difficult times, such as divorce.

But in order to reap its benefits, it’s important to choose the right therapist—someone you trust who makes you feel cared for and has the experience to help you make changes for the better in your life. A good therapist helps you become stronger and more self-aware. Finding the right therapist will probably take some time and work, but it’s worth the effort. The connection you have with your therapist is essential. You need someone who you can trust—someone you feel comfortable talking to about difficult subjects and intimate secrets, someone who will be a partner in your recovery. Therapy won’t be effective unless you have this bond, so take some time at the beginning to find the right person. It’s okay to shop around and ask questions when interviewing potential therapists. The good thing about BetterHelp is that you have so many qualified therapist to choose from. Therapy through BetterHelp also offers flexibility with scheduling your sessions and location of session. You have the convenience of attending therapy from home.

As you start to resolve your past and current issues you are more likely to reduce any feelings of anxiety and depression and be on a path to a healthier future.

I wish you the best on finding the best treatment for your current needs.
