How can I learn to love myself?

Everywhere online I look says that a big key to better mental health is learning to love yourself. I’m having real confidence issues romantically after being rejected time after time. It makes me feel worthless and pathetic as I get hung up on someone and I can’t get them out of my head. It makes me feel so lethargic and empty inside, I want to learn to love myself so I don’t need this dependence from someone else’s love and attention towards me.

Hi,

I am so sorry that you are experiencing these feelings and it's not easy trying to find healing.  You said, "I get hung up on someone and I can’t get them out of my head." Ask yourself what would you gain in a relationship that is not fulfilling.  Could you tell me more about when and how the rejection occurs?
Is the person also interested in a relationship?

I am hearing the sadness in your words when you say, "It makes me feel worthless and pathetic."- To love someone is not a crime.  However, it is not okay to feel confused about an individual that will not meet you halfway. If something or someone is not within reach, then it's smart to chose a better road to get what is needed. It is never healthy to force a relationship but take a step back. Step back to see if this is a healthy relationship that can meet your needs.  Can this person can meet your needs?

Tell me, what kind of relationship are you seeking and needing? What do you find is not going well in the relationship and after how long? I agree with you that breaking dependency chains is important. Having a solid sense of identity can help improve decision-making, increase self-esteem and self-worth, and will be a guide to what you will or will not tolerate.

J, what is your motivation for change? What can you say to yourself from this day going forward that will sustain you while working through your previous experiences? Once you find your motivation then I encourage you to hold onto it. It's imperative to seek therapy for support while you are healing. I strongly encourage you to subscribe and enter into long-term counseling for the best support.

I am here to provide you with support in this matter and am offering you a chance to have a safe space to talk. Betterhelp offers many different therapists from different backgrounds. I believe that you will have a universal experience and begin to find your answers.
