How can I move on?

Broke up with the love of my life 3 years ago. I am yet to move on. My self esteem took a major hit. All areas of my life are affected - Work, health (gained lots of weight), other relationships (family, friends etc)

I'm sorry for the difficult position you are in, it is never easy to lose someone you care deeply about. For relationships to be healthy you must first have a sense of self love and autonomy. In cases when this is not fully developed, break ups are significantly more difficult to cope with and move forward after.

There is a romantic notion that making someone your whole world and making someone your reason for being is a testamate to their importance, when in actuality it is a dismissal of your own self worth and importance. No one person can or should be one hundred percent of how you meet your needs or how you evaluate your life's worth. The main reason for this being that if and when this person is absent in any capacity, temporarily or permanent, then you are left with nothing to make meaning out of or draw will from, or put energy towards.

The most important and meaningful kind of love is self love and the cultivation of who you are across all realms of life. The answers to questions such as who am I? What is my purpose? What brings me joy? How can I love and care for myself? How can I live in a way that promotes health, happiness wellbeing? are all crucial in obtaining a meaningful and fulfilling life, and will help to maintain a sense of wellness, even when situations such as breakups shake up your mood and change your life. If you can love and care for yourself, then you will never feel the huge void that is left when someone else no longer wants the responsibility of doing so.

I encourage you to explore your interests, beliefs, morals, sexuality, goals, and all things that clarify who you are despite who is around, or involved with you, or actively participating in your life. There is no secret to healing heartbreak except for learning from the experience and allowing yourself to grow so that you can be the best version of yourself. That way, you are armed with the tools to move your life forward and make it better, and also be in the position to welcome someone new who is ready and willing to be committed to this better version of you when the time is right.

When you lose anything and anyone in your life, you have to replace that time and void with something else that is healthy. If you don't, you will always feel something is missing. Before you can love anyone you must love yourself. When you love yourself you don't need anyone to do it for you. This the difference between needing someone in your life (to feel whole), and truly wanting someone in your life because of who they are (and the added their unique benefit).

You should be whole on your own. A partner should only make your life better through positive interaction not through necessity
