How can you decide your purpose in life?

I've given up everything (job etc.) to move countries to keep my husband company. Now I have no job, friends or purpose. I'm very lonely and feel like I have no idea how to decide my future.

Hello,

It is absolutely understandable to feel lost when you are moving around and it feels like you keep following a person (your husband) to other countries. It can especially seem daunting when you don't have a job or friends. At these moments in our lives when it feels like we don't have a firm foundation to stand on we can feel lost as to what our purpose for being on this earth really is. It sounds like much of your purpose right now is supporting your husband, but it is understandable that could feel like it isn't enough to fulfill you. You might be asking yourself questions like..."What's in it for me?" or "Yes it's great we are moving for you, but what do I have to look forward to?". In situations like these there are a few things that you can do to help you find yourself. The first thing I want to challenge you on is to keep what your search for your purpose simple to start with and remind yourself that this wondering is temporary. You will find what you're supposed to do and it is ok if you don't know what that is right now. Also, be careful of allowing this journey to derail you from pursuing what you want to do. It's possible for you to find yourself along this journey with your husband because what you think is that you're searching for your purpose but there also might be some underlying resentment that you're needing to work through in therapy.

There is a book called "What Color is Your Parachute" by Richard Bolles and it's about finding meaningful life work. There is also a website that has a free version of the Myers-Briggs personality test. This will help you discover what fields you want to work in: https://www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test. Lastly, your purpose lies in the deepest desires of your heart, it's in what you can't stop thinking and praying about (if you pray), there are clues to your purpose there.

Most importantly, try and be kind to yourself throughout this process and give yourself grace that this is something you are discovering. Remember to think back to when you decided to follow him and move with him to different countries and where your desires were and be honest with yourself about what you're feeling now. It's ok if your heart has changed and exploring that in therapy is a great place to start.

Good luck!
