How am I supposed to go about going on a break from my partner?
In my professional opinion, breaks are rarely beneficial for a couple, unless it has become a safety issue or it is for a set agreed upon time. I believe that it is most important to understand that changes, even positive ones like the availability of more time together, can be an adjustment and a realistic time frame for most changes are six months. Our bodies process change both positive and negative in the same way, which explains why even great opportunities can feel incredibly stressful.
In order to have a healthy relationships both partners should be pursuing their own interests, time with friends and personal goals. This means that both individuals are intentional in pursuing their mental and physical health. When both individuals are healthy and dedicated to self growth, then when the couple has times together they can focus on enjoying their time together. It can also be helpful to focus on finding activities that both parties enjoy doing. Setting specific date times can be very beneficial so that both partners have a time to look forward to special times and a chance to share the positive and challenging things in their life.
Often the key to reducing arguments is learning how to fight fairly. It is important to ask what is the true cause of the disagreements. For example, is that there is a disagreement on how finances are being spent or how their time should be spent? Perhaps it is one of the partners does not feel appreciated. It can be helpful to set some ground rules. For example, either member can stop and walk way without being followed as long as they agree to discuss the reason for the argument within a 24 hour period. Learning how to disagree can help relationships strengthen.
This question, specifically, addressed the concept of should a break be an option for a couple who believes that the arguing is caused by spending too much time together. I believe that breaks can cause more damage and a more effective approach would be to focus on learning how to argue in a fair manner.
