The world of social media and its platforms has fundamentally changed how people communicate and form relationships and friendships. It has also changed how bullying, social isolation, rejection, and being ignored happen in people’s lives. How loneliness is actually precipitated by social media is varied and worth exploring to understand better how even the strongest-minded individuals can become caught up in its dysfunctions. People rarely go one day without connecting to the images of other’s lives or the products marketed in between them. It goes without saying that it becomes more and more difficult to embrace the here and now and the physical and present moments of life with these images.

Visuals

It is worth noting that people learn visually, auditorily, tactilely, or a combination of all of the above. Visually speaking, people can become consumed and influenced by the images seen, especially on social media. Not only the perfect body or wealth image but friends spending time with friends and family looking like they have it together all the time. It can really affect how individuals end up viewing themselves and their life situations and relationships. The feelings of loneliness spawned by this constant viewing and reviewing of social media updates, stories, and posts have resulted in people needing to take technology vacations, deactivating their pages, or at least signing out for a few days. The loneliness is manifested out of people comparing themselves to others or wishing they had what others might have instead of embracing their real-life moments.

Using social media smartly.

Social media has come a long way since its inception. Used effectively, it can draw upon commonalities providing support groups and activity groups that can enrich them. Having an idea of what social media should be to the user can stave off unnecessary feelings of loneliness and discouragement, especially from the younger populations who never knew social relationships without media. Addressing the reasons for its use and becoming deliberate in its importance can create protection from becoming vulnerable to it. Several people have chosen to leave social media and those who never signed up in the first place. Whether you choose to use it or not does matter how it is being used and if its use is helping you enjoy life more and grow.
