I don’t know what to do with my love life currently. I don’t know if I should give up on him or not
Kate,
It sounds like you are currently feeling conflicted between being with your son's father or not. I imagine that your relationship with him may have been a source of support during times of need, and you're experiencing not having that in this situation. A common time that people request help is when their home and/or work life is being impacted in ways we don't want. The holiday season is also upon us which can be a hard time to navigate a break up, since the pressure can be to get into the "spirit of the season". Your question is an important one, as there are several things that seem like they're hanging in the balance. One is your education and future career goals, and another is your family life with your son and his father.
Without knowing more about your history with your son's father, it can be hard to determine which portion of your feelings are due to the split, the relationship itself, or other reasons. I think therapy could help you understand your internal process a bit more to answer the chicken or the egg question. Either way, it is totally normal for people's emotions to impact, and be impacted by their relationships, and we can experience grief and loss following the end of a relationship, especially if we've created a family with this person. My hope for you would be to create enough insight and awareness with the help and support of a therapist so that you would feel empowered to make a decision for you that is most in line with your values for this or any future relationships, your career goals, and come from a place of positive self worth that you'd be modeling for your son.
Therapy in combination with psychiatric (medication) support can be quite the one two punch. Sometimes medication can help relieve your symptoms enough for you to engage in therapy and other supports, as well as give you the motivation you may need to grapple with some of these questions over time in weekly sessions.
I hope this helps.
