I have an overthinking problem and want help with relationships
Hi Pap, It is very nice to be connected with you today to help you find some solutions relating to your presenting concern of wanting to reduce your overthinking and improve your relationships. Many people experience this very debilitating feeling of overwhelm. If you feel this, you know how difficult it can be to do even simple tasks on a daily basis. Feeling overwhelmed is that feeling of not knowing where to start on a project; to feel like the load is so heavy, it's not worth even beginning to make any movement. It can be the result of many different factors.
Here are some helpful tips you can use to make some movement:
- Talk to yourself and tell yourself everything is okay and is going to be fine.
- Stop criticizing yourself! Speak kindly to yourself and give yourself a break.
- Be realistic about what you can accomplish in one day, one week, and one month. Don't create deadlines you know you cannot keep. Start small, then work your way through the remaining tasks. Assign yourself one task for each day. Just one. If you have difficulty with overwhelm, it is important to finally have a "win." it's hard for one task to overwhelm you. So start small like this. And if you get it done, you are free to add one more task or put it off until tomorrow. I hope that this is helpful for you Pap.
- To gain some clarity write down your thoughts, and journal with particular attention to your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.
- Learn about your values, beliefs, limitations, and strengths.
- Try not to isolate yourself and allow yourself to step outside the box, maybe go to a movie, park, or sit outside for fresh air to process your thoughts more logically with precision on your goals and aspirations.
- Try to imagine what you want in an interpersonal relationship.
- Learn to regulate your emotions and your thoughts. If a thought is negative, change that thought. You can reason with it using a wise-mind approach. You can gain skill and momentum using these skills and as they become more automatic they will stick and your thoughts will be more positive in nature.
- You can also watch many Youtube or podcast videos that can show you practical applications and skills to approach social situations if you feel anxious during that. Work through any past discrepancies with self-esteem as this is very impactful in relationships and builds self-confidence within you. Gather some good material to read and help guide you through enhanced mental health care. Use your tools and supports to help guide you.
- For anxiety, a good coping skill is not resisting the anxiety being vulnerable lean in facing it. The more that you do this and the less resistance it will become automatic for you to just go into the setting without worry. If you continue to resist it only will intensity in nature. A great book that you can read is called Positive Intelligence it helps you understand your own cognitive distortions and how they impact all that you do.
- Isolation is a negative coping skill as well as other unhealthy behaviors. Do not isolate and get out and be more in the moment of your day and the people and the relationships around you will only get better and more meaningful in your life.
If you seek to be more comfortable in social settings you have to slowly expose yourself to these "baby strides" and allow yourself to face the discomfort, worry, or fear of being rejected. Most people generally have the same anxiety they assume that you are thinking bad about them and vs versa we call this the "fortune Teller" distortion. We construct an assumption based on what we think may be true based on our own thoughts and emotions. I hope that you find some of these things helpful and we can work through the intensity of your emotions and thoughts:
- If you feel anxious in social settings try to just listen and be responsive. Learning social cues will be valuable for you in enhancing your interpersonal relationship skills.
- For anxiety, try coping strategies of deep breathing, muscle relaxation, and mindfulness skills to soothe and calm.
- Another great skill is grounding techniques.
- Maybe being able to speak more genuinely and confidently; as we all have different voices. It is ok to be able to embrace who you are.
For daydreaming, if you really want something go for it and lean into the anxiety with excitement. If you want things and desire a true relationship then you have to be willing to accept all your imperfections too. We are imperfect human beings and we think a lot. We do things in behavior and thought content they become automatic.
Very excited about your goals and treatment direction.
