What to do when relationships get boring?
When working with clients, the term “boring” is explored in many ways and can often signal anxiety or restlessness, and in the case of couplehood, boredom can signal stagnation. In the individual, this is worth avoiding and even raging against, so why wouldn’t it be worth staving off inside a relationship too? So much of life can begin to feel routine and mundane especially given the last year. But even outside of this past year, what people term ‘the grind’ can be hard on people and relationships. Work-life, child-rearing, caring for elder parents, home-keeping, and many other individual factors can affect relationships. Boring can be combated, and here are a few tried and true ways others have made that happen.
Defeating the boredom.
Bringing out the exploration and creativity of the inner child can defeat a lot of boredom and mundaneness. Going outside to explore new preserves and trails regardless of the natural inclination to do this can be very bonding. Creating projects inside the home and organizing spaces can bring together a common bond, and working together elevates the connection and lowers the feelings of boredom by bringing about more life satisfaction in the environment. Many couples enjoy and get great satisfaction from filling in a couple’s journal, cooking, gardening, watching certain films to discuss, and playing games or working on puzzles. Learning a new skill like dance or golf can be very powerful and bonding. These are the basic environmental and behavioral changes that can be implemented.
Breathing life into any relationship begins here.
Time and time again, one of the most important ways to combat the boredom felt is by being open, genuine, and introspective with your own feelings and sharing them in the relationship. After all, significant others, whether married or not, children, or not, are some of the closest relationships that people will ever have, so by practicing attunement, openness, and sharing that is genuine, the relationship can grow deeper. The other important piece of any avoidance of boredom is breathing life into your own self-interests. By doing this, you can report back all you’ve learned and experienced in your relationship. The combination of both individual and relationship fulfillment will stave off boredom.
