Which Relationships are Most Important and Why?
As human beings, we all need a connection in our life. It is one of our most basic needs, as we are not meant to live in isolation. Relationships can be hard to maintain, and for them to be healthy, it takes work. They require open and honest communication, a safe space to have conversations when needed, and ensuring the relationship has a balance of power.
There are four important relationships that people should have in their life: Spirit, self, family, and friendships.
Spirit does not always mean you have to believe in God, be a religious person, or attend church. Instead, this is the belief in something bigger than yourself. This belief allows us to navigate life when things get hard and gives us hope when good things happen to us. It helps us navigate through life’s journey when we believe in something greater than ourselves.
Our relationship with our own self is crucial, as it helps us understand who we are and allows for growth in the different stages of our lives. It lets us reflect on our strengths and weaknesses. When we have a healthy, positive relationship with ourselves, we can have positive self-esteem. Your relationships with other people are also a reflection of who you are or who you will become. So, as you foster those other relationships in your life, remember, those relationships will have an impact on your relationship with yourself.
Having a strong sense of family relationships is important because it teaches us at a young age how to trust others. It is also important to our overall well-being as we develop throughout the different stages of our life. Family allows us to be loved for who we are and create a safe space to feel loved, protected, and supported. It builds the foundation of who we will become later in life. Not all families are going to get along or share a strong family bond. However, it is still important to show love, respect, and support to your family, as long it is a healthy relationship.
Friendship is the fourth most important relationship we will build in our lifetime. When you have a healthy relationship with your friends, your life overall life span will increase. Good friends help decrease your feelings of loneliness and therefore increase your productivity and your overall mental health. Healthy friendships encourage us and challenge us to be a better version of ourselves. They can provide a strong support system and tend to play a significant role in our overall self-esteem.
It is important to remember that while these relationships are important, they will only positively influence our lives if they are healthy. We can learn to set appropriate boundaries as needed.
