Why can’t I feel love from parents even though they are showing it clear enough?

My parents have shown me nothing but love since I was an infant but I haven’t been able to feel it since high school. Why is that? Ever since my 7th grade I haven’t been able to recover from a depression that I still believe exists. Could this be why?

Hi CJD,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts here. You have taken the right step by reaching out for professional help in this matter.

There could be many underlying reasons for you to not feel affection from your parents. The first step would be to identify the cause of this problem, perhaps some people may be suffering from an underlying mental health condition and may need to see a mental health professional to see if PTSD, bipolar disorder or any other mood disorder is present. Another reason for this could be the lingering effect of depression.  I want you to reflect more on your feelings and try to identify when you started to feel this way and why you are feeling detached. It is important to be aware of this shift so that you are able to process this feeling. It would be good if you can let your parents know how you are feeling and discuss this with them. Your parents genuinely love you and most likely are going to understand your emotions.

It is also important to understand your depression. Depression can make one feel like they are in a black hole and are unable to pull themselves out of it. It is truly a very difficult feeling and very hard to overcome; however, if you are determined you are able to recover from it. Many people have recovered from episodes of depression and have learned to cope with issues in a healthy manner. Some daily lifestyle habits help people overcome depression such as exercising regularly since it creates endorphins in the brain thus leading to a better mood. Eating healthy is also important as it helps in regulating moods. Some of the foods that help in elevating moods are fruits and vegetables that are colorful. These foods have nutrients that are beneficial for brain help and improving your mood. It is extremely important to keep stress in check. Managing stress in a positive way such as with meditation and mindfulness can reduce the stress hormones in your body and improve your moods. I would also encourage you to get enough sleep so that you are well rested. All the lifestyle factors impact our mood and can help us feel better. I wish you the best in strengthening your relationship with your loved ones and hope that you are able to recover from this and live a healthier life in which you are able to respond to affection.

Best,

Dr. Saima
