Why Marriage is Bad?
Marriage is not good or bad. We can evaluate our circumstances to see if we are ready to get married, if the person we are considering marrying would be a good fit, and, if we are already married, whether seeking help for the marriage or even ending the marriage would improve our lives.
Marry for the Right Reasons
There are no universal right reasons to get married, but you can determine, based on your values, beliefs, and goals, doing so is a good decision for you. Some questions you can ask yourself are:
- Do I feel pressured to get married, and if so, where is this pressure coming from?
- How long have I wanted to get married? Is this something that I have planned for a while, giving myself a chance to think it over?
- How will I feel a few years from now if I get married? How confident am I that I will feel that way?
- Is my mental health stable, and am I in a good state of mind (for example, not experiencing significant grief of a loved one passing away or a relationship ending)?
Choose the Right Partner
There are also no universal characteristics that should be sought in a partner, but there are questions that can be asked to help determine if you are choosing a partner that is right for you:
- How comfortable am I truthful and open with this person? Do I feel that this person is truthful and open to me?
- Do I think I need to change this person? Do I think this person wants to change me?
- Do we have long-term compatible goals?
- Is this partner ready for marriage?
- Does this partner have any behaviors that really concern me or seem to be escalating (like trying to control me, putting me down, limiting who I can talk to, being unfaithful, etc.)?
You’re Not Stuck
Some marriages start great but can become unhealthy, while others may find that the marriage improves with time. The reality is that if both individuals are willing to sacrifice time and energy into the relationship, help is available. Marriage counseling is available and can produce great results. It is not only for those whose relationship is really struggling—it can be used to improve even generally happy marriages. Also, when relationships are particularly unhealthy or both partners are not willing to seek help, separation can be a tool that can allow for a chance to start over. Remember that you are not stuck, and while marriage can be bad, you deserve to be happy and have options.
