Why marriage is important?

Marriage is such a beautiful and unique type of relationship some people get to experience in life.  As divorce rates are higher than ever, it can be really easy to question if marriage is important or not.  Whether or not it is important is up to each person to think through their own values and desires for their life.  There are several reasons to argue that marriage is important.  One of those reasons includes the fact that marriage is a partnership for life.  While some of us have friendships and family relationships that last a long time, marriage is an agreed-upon commitment to one another for the rest of your life.  That kind of partnership can be really comforting for someone’s life. 

Through having a partnership for the rest of your life, your spouse will naturally be someone that knows you really well.  Having someone that knows you better than anyone else can be really powerful.  For example, if you are going through a stressful time and not prioritizing self-care, your spouse can likely pick up on that and let you know.  Without someone like that who knows you so well, you may never realize that you are not prioritizing self-care.  Your spouse becomes a huge outlet of support in low moments throughout your life.  Whether there are low moments for yourself or low moments together, it can feel comforting to have that partner to help you cope with the difficult time.

Marriage is also important in the fact that you can achieve life goals more realistically.  Single individuals can certainly achieve certain life goals, but those goals can become that much easier to achieve when you can share them with someone.  For example, if you have the goal to buy a home someday, that goal can be easier to achieve with two incomes rather than just one.  Life goals, such as financial goals, family goals, among others, just become more easily achieved when you have someone to help get you to them.  Those common life goals are not only what makes marriage important, but such a beautiful path people can be on together.
