There are many ways to grow into an adult and what it means to feel accomplished and settled. For many decades, people construed marriage as one of the hallmarks of becoming an adult. However, marriage is not necessarily important in terms of creating an adult life that is worth living. Any choice-making allows a person to create some kind of self-limitation, and marriage is on some level limiting. With all the wonderful advantages to being married, there are also disadvantages, and it is not the most important step in the world for many people now.

Marriage is not important because it does not need to happen to define you, and it does not need to happen anymore even to create a family system. Although many people want to live with others in a community, they do not necessarily need to choose marriage anymore. Marriage is not necessary for self-fulfillment, and many people choose to date long-term or not date at all and have their own space living on their own indefinitely. People who do this have an incredible amount of freedom. Although many of them might feel less secure financially, the pay-off is having their sense of independence and choosing not to share their life with one person.

Marriage is a choice, and it doesn’t mean you are any more important or worthy if you choose it or not choose it. Marriage is largely a social construct and a religious construct brought about by people creating order in the world many centuries ago. Marriage no longer needs to happen for a person to reach many of their dreams and goals regarding what kind of lifestyle they want to live or what kind of career they want to be a part of. More and more people are choosing to be in long-term relationships versus the commitment of marriage. What is important and meaningful for one person may not necessarily be for another, and that is OK! While marriage is still a valued part of many lives, families, friendships, and larger community supports are taking a role in long-term support.
