Is it normal to listen to someone make a statement but in your head question it?
Hi,
Yes it is normal, especially when we have difficulty recognizing /acknowledging our strengths. Sometimes, our experiences can impact or shape the things we tell ourselves. Before long, it becomes something we believe (also called core beliefs), even though it is false.
There are ways to work around that. First, let's start with what you believe about yourself (most peoples core beliefs are negative. ex. "I'm worthless, no one loves me, etc). What are some of the things you say which support this? An example for someone whose core belief is that they are worthless may say: "I'm stupid, I can't do anything right". The core belief is false! Just like the supporting thought, they are both inaccurate and wrong.
Change starts when we start with finding the positive facts about ourselves. If you can't find them, that's fine. When we feel badly about ourselves, the positive information can be difficult to identify. When we can't find them, what are the positive things that others say? For the person who feels worthless, their friends may like them for their sense of humor, giving nature, and being supportive. All of these are positives and can go against these core beliefs. Going back to the example, The person may say to his/herself "I'm stupid, I can't get this right. However, my friend Angela (made up name) said that she she liked how I fixed this situation before, so I am innovative (or imaginative, an expert at what I do, etc.). When the mind wants to take it back, you stop there. Don't allow modifiers, as they allow the positive and negative thoughts to cancel out. (Ex. I'm innovative, but she's just saying that). They do not allow the positive thought to have any credit.
Using your message as an example, if you do not see your positive traits, why is your friend happy to be friends with you? What are some of the traits they like in you? I'm sure they can find quite a few. Take these facts and tell them to yourself, even when you want to do the opposite or don't believe it. This can be work, as again, our mind wants to go to the negative. There is also fun in finding the positive traits. The best part is, you don't have to do it alone. Speak with someone you are close to or even a therapist to help with this.
I hope this helps :)
