Is it possible that poor self confidence can cause issues staying in a relationship?

I’ve been having issues for a few years maintaining a relationship longer than 3 months. I always seem to overthink situations if the person doesn’t answer me one day and assume the person is no longer is interested in me. Usually, the person breaks up with me within 3 weeks to 3 months. I’ve not yet had anything last longer. Is it possible for my poor self confidence to cause this?

Yes it is possible that low confidence and self esteem could cause problems within a relationship for various reasons. When someone has low confidence and self esteem they may constantly need reassurance from their partner which could become very overwhelming for them. It can subconsciously result in the partner feeling pressured or that you are too needy or insecure, leading to co-dependency which can quickly taint the relationship.

In order to change that possibility it would require you to look within yourself and ask what has created your insecurities and lack of confidence, how can you change that, is it something that you can control? If so then what can you do differently? Is your lack of confidence due to childhood issues or trauma? What makes you doubt yourself and how can you find ways of helping yourself to build that confidence? What are your core values? Have you spent many years doubting your abilities and focusing on negative aspects of your personality or behaviors rather than embracing all of the positive things you have accomplished?

Once you have been able to work through this and be comfortable with who you are as a person and what you have to offer in a relationship, you might find that things improve and you are able to form a healthier attachment to your partner. Furthermore, if you have experienced some difficulties with attachment as a child that would also factor into why it is difficult to maintain a relationship after a few months. Is it possible you self sabotage and put barriers up so that you don't feel rejected when the relationship doesn't work? All of these questions are important for you to ask yourself and explore with openness and honesty. It is an area that change can occur. It would take some reflection on your part and some soul searching but with the right tools and support in place, change can occur and you will rebuild your confidence. I hope that helps and provides you with some peace, please reach out to me if there is anything I can do to help.

Sincerely,

Patricia
