Leaving toxic relationship but still needing physical comfort, what can I do?
Leaving a toxic relationship, or any relationship, can make you feel emotionally vulnerable. Toxicity has a tendency to wear you down over time and make you feel unworthy and unloved. So much so, you feel it would be beneficial for you to seek the physical comfort of another person in an effort to gain reassurance and feel loved/secure. Even though this might sound hard, or even impossible, I think it would be beneficial for you to go on a journey of self love and self-acceptance.
Lots of times, we look for temporary fixes to situations that left us feeling emotionally depleted. It is human nature to want to feel loved and desired but, of course, putting a bandaid on this and creating a temporary fix can often lead to us making things worse. Imagine seeking the arms of another person and it turns out to be someone who genuinely does not care for your best interest. This can be absolutely heart crushing and take a great emotional toll on your psyche. This can actually increase feelings of being unworthy and unloveable. After such a tumultuous, toxic relationship, it is time to start being nice to you. The benefits of this can be beautiful.
Your self love journey starts with one of the most important people that you know...you! No one can fulfill this for you. It is going to be difficult seeing your ex-partner for some time because wounds are still new and fresh. Working on yourself can lessen the negative effects his presence has on you. I want you to start journaling a few minutes day. It would be great for your entries to include positive quotes and attributes about yourself. This is a great exercise to build self love, self worth, and self acceptance. Once you have achieved this, it will become easier for you to look inward for courage and strength. That way, you will become less likely to look for temporary fixes like falling into the arms of another person who does not genuinely care for you!
Most importantly, during such a difficult time, I want you to surround yourself with people who actually, genuinely love and care for you. Your children and close family can provide this comfort!
I hope this helps you begin your journey of self healing!
