What kind of therapy do I need?
I realize memories from your past can be very alarming. It is hard to get over experiences from your past that seem to haunt you into adulthood. I think it is really important to be able to heal those past traumas so you can move on with your life and be as happy as possible. I would like to know if anything in particular triggers your anxiety or makes it worse? I believe we are harder on ourselves than we are on others and don't allow ourselves to feel OK in our own skin. I think as you work on your recovery you can shed some of these insecurities . Something I find helpful is to stay in the moment at hand. This is called being Mindful. We can only deal with what is right in front of us in this moment. The past is gone and the future hasn't happened yet. There are some strategies that can be used to help one stay calm in the moment. You need to have a "safe place" where you can go in your mind when you feel stressed or upset. When we feel that we have unresolved conflict from the past the human reaction is to continue to play out the scenario until it is resolved. In order to do this we sometimes get into relationship that mimic ones from our past . Often we chose other people to be in our lives that we expect will re live the past trauma with us so that we can resolve the conflict. Of course the doesnt really work and we end up in a relationship that merely re traumatizes us. A better way to resolve the past conflict may be roll playing with a trusted therapist or changing our thinking errors that led us to believe the trauma was our fault. It takes a lot of courage to reach out and ask for help. The fact that you took that step says a lot about you. It means that you are allowing yourself to be vulnerable and experience the healing process. This is the first step. I commend you for that and hope to work with you in the future to help you move forward into a productive confident life.
