Progression and advancement of some kind are frequently encouraged in our society. It's understandable to want to avoid settling although it does not have to be portrayed as a negative. In the professional realm, career development is seen at times as necessary for progression, refinement, and an increased sense of satisfaction. It is also necessary because at times an individual may have an idea as to what they want to work towards but not an understanding of how to develop their talents, skills, abilities, and even themselves to achieve the outcome they desire.

Career development has the ability to accentuate what qualities you already possess and possibly bring about some that the individual was unaware existed. For example, if someone has aspirations of attaining a role or position in upper management may benefit from seeking various forms of education, knowledge, and training to gain the development needed. By developing themselves in this manner the individual increases their ability for success and makes themselves more marketable in the way in which they originally planned or otherwise. It's healthy to consider how career development can expand an individual in a general way also thereby creating flexibility in the career choices that are currently available but also those that may present themselves in the future.

Career development is also useful for increasing an individual’s connectedness with the kind of work they are doing. All too often we hear of people being unhappy with the work they do and sometimes that is directly related to being involved in a career or work that is not sufficiently a match with the personal characteristics needed to make it a harmonious relationship. Through involving themselves in career development individuals can get to know themselves better and at times look beyond the surface of what they are doing in order to more intrinsically connect with their role, position, and actual tasks. This increased emotional connection not only allows an individual to have a greater sense of worth and value in their career but also provides them an opportunity to advance and develop in a way that also benefits the company or organization for whom they have decided to work with.
