Having a career can be a difficult thing to achieve and also have a huge impact on your mental health.  In most careers, people will spend most of their awake hours working so naturally, their career will have a huge impact on their mental health. As you consider your career it is important to consider whether or not you are someone that wants to work to live or if you would rather live to work.  There is no wrong answer there but an important value to consider in the career world.  For example, if you decide you are more of a work to live kind of person, you might choose a career that you are less passionate about, but that gives you the needed finances to live the life you would like to live.  So it can be helpful to think about where you lie with that and make sure to own the pros and cons of that for your life.

Being able to have a career also gives you something to do with your day-to-day.  Our mental health can improve with relaxation, but it can suffer when we are stagnant.  Having a career helps us to be less stagnant and give a purpose to our day-to-day.  For some people, having a career helps them feel like they are living out a purpose in their life. Living out that purpose can bring such a satisfying feeling to their life. Some people also like to focus on the worth and contribution their career brings to society.  By focusing on that contribution, you can feel more drive and motivation with your career.

Careers are a great outlet to help achieve certain goals in life.  Whether they are accomplishments or financial goals, careers can help someone get to those goals.  While careers are important, it is also important to keep in mind a balance of healthy outlets in your life.  Careers, like most long-term things in life, will have peaks and valleys.  Therefore, it is important to have other outlets in life to help get you through the valleys.  On the other hand, careers can help bring value to your life whenever something outside of your career is not going well.
