I live with my family and senior parents how can I handle all the stress?
Stress is a normal part of life. We all encounter stress in a variety of different situations. In your situation, you reported that your mother has numerous health issues and your father has cognition problems; which can be stressful.
The most important thing to do is to recognize, accept and manage your stress to avoid negative negative physical and emotional consequences. Stress that is not managed can manifest into chronic stress. Research states that chronic stress has shown to suppress your immune system. This will can cause underlying conditions like anxiety and depression. There are many stress management tools that can help you to process.
- Acknowledging your own stress cues.
- Take time to do something that is meaningful, relaxing and fun to you and your family.
- Practice mindfulness, and/or deep breathing. The benefits of mindfulness includes increased resilience, reduced stress, increased insight. It also helps you become aware of potentially damaging thoughts that cycle over and over again in your mind; all of which make you stressed and unhappy.
- Getting adequate sleep (at least 8 hrs); this is evidence based that getting enough sleep will make people feel less stress and sad.
- Also, make sure you develop a support system. Your support system consist of the people who may fill different roles in your life. You can use them to talk about your feelings and help you.
- It is also good to accept your emotions/feelings. It's okay to feel sad, anxious, or stressed. Acknowledging these emotions and naming them can help you be compassionate towards ourselves.

- Another great way that can help with stress is gratitude practice. One way is to create a journal to record one thing you are grateful for everyday. Laughing is clinically proven to be a stress reliever. Laughter is able to improve mood directly and to moderate negative consequences of stressful events on psychological well-being.
Lastly, it is always good to speak to a therapist if you are feeling overwhelmed. If you use these daily, these practices will reduce stress and burnout. It will help you enjoy your life again and ultimately better serve your family and people around you.
