My question is how can you help me try to figure out my relationship with my partner and kids?
Hi there! I am so glad you were able to reach out for help, see that you can do something about the unsatisfactory it seems you find yourself in. There is a strong sense of feeling overwhelmed and sad in what you wrote. It seems like there are several things going on at the same time in your self perception. It's good that you are able to take it all out and put it in writing, it's a great way to start taking a good look at what is going on.
I would first need to get to know you to give you the proper guidance. It is always helpful to me to learn about my client's background and upbringing, their immediate family, supports and other members of their social circles. I also like to learn about their work, hobbies, interests, whatever gives they are passionate about. Spirituality is another area I explore, to ensure it is integrated in our work if it is meaningful to my clients.
However, right as an initial consult I would suggest you make a priority list of what you want to address in therapy. Is it your sad feelings and mood changes? Your relationship with family? Your struggle with self image? Sometimes, these decisions about prioritizing your needs can be quite challenging. In those situations, the age old question about the magic wand is very helpful: If you had a magic wand and you could change anything in your life, what would the first three things be? This is a crucial question because I want to make sure we start wherever you want to start.
I offer that these are workable issues. I have been successful in addressing these issues through a combination of treatment modalities, that would include cognitive behavior therapy, meditation, mindfulness, and motivational therapy. It seems you can clearly see a time when you felt much more in control of your thoughts and feelings, as well as what you wanted to do in life. You and I will work closely and carefully at finding peace and the way to the old self you miss about your being.
