About me

Welcome! My name is Cara and I am independently licensed in the state of CT as a professional counselor. I have been providing individual counseling to adolescents, adults, and the elder population since 2013 across RI and CT. I have experience working in the corrections population as well as in the community setting. I treat individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, mood disorders, addiction and psychotic disorders. I recently contracted though the Suicide Prevention Lifeline as a crisis clinician.

My style of therapy is very client-centered. I work under the modalities of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) primarily. CBT focuses on challenging our distorted thinking and working in reality. Often anxiety and depression will misconstrue our thinking, making simple tasks difficult or unbearable. Something that was easy or even enjoyable is now a struggle. CBT allows the client to recognize how our thoughts, feelings and behaviors are connected. In changing our thoughts we inevitably will be able to change our painful feelings and unhealthy behaviors. DBT counseling, with the focus on the dialectical aspect, is really learning how to accept or change. Many things in our lives cannot be changed, therefore radical acceptance is a concept that can be mastered when we just say 'yes' to life, as it is. Mindfulness, a major key word a lot of us are hearing now, is also a concept of DBT counseling. Our focus today is often on everything other than our needs and our wants; mindfulness helps us achieve a higher understanding of who we are and what we have in the moment. I have a very relaxed style of counseling; I use humor when needed and I really like sessions to be a collaborative approach. I want my clients to help develop their treatment goals and expectations in therapy without the judgement of what their therapist needs from them.

I love my job, I love my clients and I am excited to begin this journey with you. Online counseling I imagine is new for you; remember there is no right or wrong way to go about doing this.
