I am an independently licensed counselor in Albuquerque, NM. At this writing, I am 67 years old and have done a lot of different things in my life. I spent many years in the military, first in the Marine Corps and later in the Air Force. I pastored for several years and spent some time in emergency services and disaster response. These roles have included involvement in numerous community issues such as domestic violence and addictions.
As a therapist I have worked with various issues such as depression, anxiety, stress, and emotional trauma. I also provide relationship counseling and coaching in communication and conflict resolution. Due to my extensive work in emergency and disaster services and as a chaplain I work with people in emotional trauma, sometimes in counseling but sometimes at a traumatic scene.
I believe each person is a unique blend of personality, values, education, heredity, culture, religion, and life experiences. As such, I approach each client with respect, compassion, and as one of a kind. Effective counseling is about unconditional acceptance and appreciation for each person and working together in partnership to address his or her needs.
My root counseling approach is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) which is based on the link between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. However, there is also a person’s physiology and medical conditions that factor into their lives. I believe in a holistic approach to therapy in which we look at every facet which contributes to the issues the person wishes to address.
In my private life, my wife and I have been married for 42 years and we have two children and two grandchildren. My hobbies include motorcycling, ham radio, and martial arts.

Dr Russell is very helpful and understanding. He takes the time to understand where everything started which helps me gain insight as to why I’m feeling the way I am.
Dr Russell is attentive, engaged and very honest with his approach. He offers constructive feedback and insight and I feel more at ease working with him. His experience with a variety of patients is apparent as he treats me like an individual and addresses my issues with confidence. I feel safe working with him.
His approach has been therapeutic in a way that goes beyond just doing ‘therapy’ and it’s been of immense benefit to me.
A very understanding and attentive individual. Thank you.
Very lovely man.
