About me

My name is Carlos Velazquez. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 14 years experience. As a clinician my goal is to help you discover who you really are, what it takes to be fulfilled, and how to live life to its fullest. The type of therapies I feel are most effective are called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).

What is CBT? CBT is based on several core principles, including:
1. Psychological problems are based, in part, on faulty or unhelpful ways of thinking.
2. Psychological problems are based, in part, on learned patterns of unhelpful behavior.
3. People can learn better ways of coping with their problems, thereby relieving their symptoms and becoming more effective in their lives.
4. CBT is based on the simple idea that your thoughts and not external events, create your feelings.

What is DBT? DBT provides clients with new skills to manage painful emotions and decrease conflict in relationships. DBT specifically focuses on providing therapeutic skills in four key areas.
1. Mindfulness focuses on improving your ability to accept and be present in the current moment.
2. Distress tolerance is geared toward increasing your tolerance of negative emotion, rather than trying to escape from it.
3. Emotion regulation covers strategies to manage and change intense emotions that are causing problems in your life.
4. Interpersonal effectiveness consists of techniques that allow you to communicate with others in a way that is assertive, maintains self-respect, and strengthens relationships.

Before you decide on working with me, I want you to be fully informed on what I can and cannot do. I can provide you with tools and techniques to:
• Learn how to recognize your unhelpful thinking patterns that are creating problems, and then to reevaluate them in light of reality.
• Gaining a better understanding of the behavior and motivation of others.
• Using problem-solving skills to cope with difficult situations.
• Learn to develop a greater sense of confidence in your own abilities.
• Face your fears instead of avoiding them.
• Learn to calm your mind and be more present minded.

What I cannot do is provide letters/documents related to:
• A formal diagnosis
• Emotional Support Animals (ESA)
• Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
• Medication recommendations
• Exceptional Education recommendations
• Government or court related matters

All journeys begin with the first step, and you have done that by searching for help. It is often the toughest step to take, but it is well worth it. I look forward to working with you.

Carlos is an amazing listener who also helps guide your line of thinking. He has a deep understanding of emotional trauma and isn't afraid to remind you of your worth or even thank you for working as hard as he does to help yourself grow. He is someone I trust with my deepest issues and I know my life is in good hands.

Carlos, listens to equip. He is confident that the answers we seek are already tools that we possess. These are readily available and at our disposal and he is willing to walk his clients through how to use, explore and better understand these treasures we have within us. He also encourages me to show more grace towards myself and even gives me feedback with how to navigate that and put skin on some terms that can feel ambiguous at times. He is intrigued by and embraces mystery in a way that is contagious. Much gratitude for this counselor and therapist.

I have been working with Carlos for 2 years now. He has given me the tools to manage my anxiety and understand how my brain works and processes emotions. He is always been respectful, listens carefully and is open to talk about any topic with curiosity and kindness. I will never be able to thank him enough for how much he's helped me.
