About Me

Hello, my name is Catherine Lovern and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Florida. I commend you for taking the steps to seek help, as this is a significant strength. I believe that empowerment is the key to lasting change. Over the past seven years, I have gained experience working with several different populations focusing on Substance Use Disorders, Depression, Eating Disorders, and serious mental illnesses. I also spent several years as the director of a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness and providing counseling services to individuals who could not afford treatment. I specialize in Addictions and a broad range of Mental Illnesses, from Mild Depression to Schizophrenia and Psychoses.

I use evidence based practices in all of my work. If you choose to continue with the therapeutic process, we will work together to focus on specific areas, set achievable goals, and create a plan with specific action steps to help you reach those goals. I practice different types of therapy, however, I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which uses the relationship between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in order to create positive change. In a nutshell, the thoughts we think determine the way we feel which determines the way we act. It is easy to personalize negative circumstances and start engaging in negative self-talk, which affects our mood as well as our behavior. It is like wearing a cloudy pair of glasses through which we perceive events that occur in our lives, and this can have a significant effect on your mood. However, this works the opposite way as well – when we monitor and begin to change our self-talk, our mood can improve, and we become more motivated to make changes. When we practice new behaviors, this also reinforces the positive feelings. In short, I can help you clean those glasses a little so that you can see things more clearly, and then I can help you take some steps toward where you would like to be.
