I am licensed in Illinois as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and earned my Master's in Education, Clinical Counseling in 2012 from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. My career as a therapist began in the school system working with youth, educators and parents to understand how mental health needs impact one's ability to live, laugh, love and learn. Since, I have transitioned to working in a Community Mental Health setting serving people of all ages to address barriers that impact their overall ability to connect with others and achieve their goals.
Although I believe in utilizing many different evidence-based approaches in my work as a therapist, such as CBT, DBT, and ACT, I initially work with people to build a strong therapeutic alliance utilizing a person-centered approach. I believe it is critical to the care of an individual to understand their culture, beliefs, and goals and apply a multi-cultural, social justice and trauma-informed lens. This allows the client to own their story and utilize my expertise in psychotherapy to support them as they uncover their true potential. I believe that each person has what they need to achieve their goals and my role is to provide insight and guidance to help a person go where they want and need.
I have extensive experience working with a wide-spectrum of ages from children to older adults. Many people I have supported in the past have sought support to manage symptoms of depression, anxiety, child/parent relational issues, sexual and domestic violence, and history of trauma where symptoms may be limiting a person from reaching their full potential. I do not believe that any person is "broken" or that their diagnosis is their full story. I believe that recovery is not just possible but probable when a person is provide the gift of insight and the right tools to use that insight to make healthy changes in their life.
My approach to therapy is likely not unique. I am a human and I believe in genuine human connection and experiences. I am not an expert on your life but hope to learn about you and use my set of skills and the areas that I consider myself an expert in to help you. I believe therapy is a journey and along that journey we will take many paths together...some may be uncomfortable, some could be fun, some could be painful. I encourage real human moments including laughter, crying, anger, confusion, indecisiveness. Being human means we come with all these emotions and sometimes we just need another person to help us understand how to unpack those emotions and help us to not feel so afraid of them. There are many therapeutic interventions to aide in this including Cognitive Behavioral and Dialectal Behavior Therapies. Another very powerful approach is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I don't expect the people I work with to know what these strategies are but I am always open to explaining my approaches as I interweave them in our time together.
Lastly, as a white, female therapist, I also feel it is crucial to acknowledge my privilege and the limitations that traditional counseling methods have in treating all people from all backgrounds. As a therapist, it is my responsibility to expand my understanding and lens in order to meet the client where they are at through education and the immersion into cultures different than my own.
I hope to work with you and provide a genuine experience that is transformative!
