Hello and welcome! Thanks for checking me out. Lots of folx say that I'm not the typical kind of therapist.
My name is Corazón Burke, but I go by Cora, and my pronouns are they/she. Yes, my name is the Spanish word for heart, so one could say that helping people is my calling. I'm known for my compassion for others. I am licensed in Florida, Maine, and Washington, with an additional Florida certification as a Masters Level Certified Addiction Professional.
I graduated with my Master's degree in Psychology with an emphasis on mental health counseling from the University of West Florida in 2012. I began providing telephone crisis counseling in 2009, and since then I've worked in many different settings with individuals of all ages, with a variety of mental health struggles, including addiction, stress, depression and anxiety, grief, and trauma. I have special interest in working with individuals who have suffered as a result of existing while fat. I have received additional training in treating trauma and addiction, and come from a trauma-informed, person centered background.
I am sex positive (including poly/kink, and sex work), LGBTQIA+ and neurodiversity affirming, fat body liberating, and disability advocating. When it comes to substance use, my focus is on meeting needs. I firmly believe in creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful space for every person and enjoy working with those who have unconventional or alternative lifestyles and spiritual/religious beliefs. I will not judge you, for any reason, and will hold you in unconditional positive regard. No subject is taboo. I won’t claim to know everything, and I’m a human that messes up at times, but I’m happy to walk with you on the path to knowing yourself and living the life that you want. If you feel like you're an outcast, or feel like you're weird or different than others, I welcome you into this space.
It's so important to click with your therapist. If you are looking for someone you can be real with, and who will be real with you, then I might be the therapist you are seeking. Let's break out of the box together, and help you on the journey of the life you deserve. I believe in lifelong learning and do not expect or want my clients to do emotional labor for me. I strive to be aware of my privilege and challenge the systems of oppression that we live in.
I also work with Active Military, Veterans, and their family members. I have completed multiple trainings with the Center for Deployment Psychology and am a registered Star Behavioral Health provider.
Life can certainly be overwhelming at times, and my goal is to help guide you in overcoming the challenges that you have experienced. I firmly believe that there is hope for growth for every person. I will work with you to develop your strengths and find effective, healthy solutions for managing your problems. Every person needs someone who will listen to them, and consider them with unconditional, positive regard. Every person can benefit from having someone without bias to support them in managing the stressors that they are facing. You deserve to have a safe space in which you can unburden yourself. You are not a bother and I welcome you to work with me.
When you begin your work with me, I will ask you to complete a psychosocial interview, and treatment plan, prior to beginning the bulk of our work together.
As far as my style for counseling, I really am an eclectic kind of counselor. I draw from many different theoretical orientations and what's called evidenced based practices. I try not to be too formal and wordy. I am formally trained in ACT, EMDR, Real Life Heroes, PCIT, and TF-CBT and also draw from my knowledge of brief solution focused therapy, CBT, and others. I check and reply to messages daily. I do attach worksheets here and there, especially if they are really pertinent to what we are discussing.
As this is my full time job, I offer sessions throughout the day, Monday through Saturday. I will meet you where you are at and want to help make this a productive and healing experience for you. The only day I take off is Sunday, as well as the last weekend of the month.
The hours from which I typically hold sessions are between 7 am and 8pm Central Time.
You can expect me to be professional, and very responsive to messages, as I reply to messages twice daily (morning and evening). I take my position here very seriously, and treat it like I would my private practice. You deserve top quality care!
Now a little bit about me on a personal level: I live in the panhandle of Florida with my beautiful huskies, and cats. While I try to keep my pets quiet and off screen, lucky clients may get glimpses of them on camera, or be treated to a conversation as my huskies love to talk at times. I am active in the animal rescue world. I have lived experience in multiple realms, from poverty, neurodiversity, being queer, and disability. You'll find that I have vivid, wild colored hair, and am okay with my weirdness. I bring my authentic self to session.

Cora has helped me navigate through the largest change I've faced in my life when smaller changes have historically knocked me down. We've progressed to working on other issues and I feel I can talk to her freely and both be heard and offered sound advice and suggestions for improving my life.

Cora is by far one of the best therapists I have ever had. I have always struggled with therapy and the idea of wanting to go. They make therapy easy even when I am dragging my feet and are a vault of resources that only help me with my problems. 10/10 would recommend to a friend

Cora is a gem. They are a delight and very helpful and knowledgable, a very good listener. They are kind and understanding and respectful of boundaries. They acknowledge my growth and aren't afraid to tell me like it is when applicable and appropriate. They are the best. And I could not recommend a therapist more.

Cora has been there for me the past year in a way that no other therapist has. I feel Cora pushing me to be better and to heal but with zero judgement on the days where I feel like I’ve slid back into my old ways. If everyone had a Cora in their lives, I think this world would dramatically improve!

There is neither enough time in the day nor character spaces available on the internet to give Cora the proper review she truly deserves, but what I *can* say is that she has already helped me navigate some of the toughest mindsets I've endured throughout my nearly half-century of life in just a few months.
From family and personal boundary issues to the sudden ending of a long standing romantic partnership (and its imminent psycho-emotional fallout), from a workplace injury that's developing into a change of perspective regarding balance and a potential career path move, to self love/care/confidence and all the hard work that comes before the payoff - she has been right there and easily available the whole time through various means ready to listen and lend guidance through these times of doubt and feelings of incompetence, helping me move forward through this often overwhelming life.
TL;DR If Cora can help me break my decades-long resistance to counseling and help me understand that no matter how I feel about myself in the moment I still deserve love, respect, honesty and kindness, imagine what she (and therapy in general) might be able to you do for you.

Cora is amazing. I have searched for a therapist that I felt comfortable with for so long, and finding them has helped me so much over these past couple of months. I feel that they really understand my issues and care about seeing me succeed. I have already learned so much from them.

I appreciate Cora’s patience during our sessions. I feel overwhelmed by my own existence right now, and yet she continues to remain calm and upfront with me. I also like the fact that I can choose different forms of contact to have our sessions as well as the rolling communication through text messages. I’m looking forward to my own progress through better help.
Written on Aug 02, 2021 after therapy with Corazon (Cora) for 2 weeks on issues concerning addictions, grief, eating disorders, and self esteem
When I first started with counseling I was feeling so down that I wasn’t sure that it was helping. But now after 7 months, I can say with confidence that I would not want anyone else but Cora. It took me a long time (at no fault to Cora) to not, expect to be judged by what I was saying, or worry that Cora might not respond how I want, but she literally says the perfect things every time. I feel listened to, and in a life where there are lots of opinions (a big family) coming at me all the time, it’s nice to have someone who is just on my side. If Cora was not my Therapist, I would 100% want to be friends, and hang out with her dogs and cats who often appear in video chats!

I appreciate the compassion and empathy Cora brings to our sessions. They have helped me tremendously with processing my emotions and having compassion for myself. They're an amazing listener and I feel very comfortable being vulnerable and sharing how I feel, and they've never made me feel judged or embarrassed. I look forward to each session and know I'm in great hands.

I feel lucky to have Cora as my counselor in just a few message she got to the heart of the matter and helped me figure out a few things. I did not expect therapy by messaging to work so quickly to be honest so Yay !
We have set goals and she offered worksheets and reading material that is extremely relevant.
