Cynthia "Cindy" Speakman

About Me

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, based in Southern California. After obtaining my Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, I began my career providing case management and legal advocacy to survivors of domestic violence and their families. I also ran psycho-educational groups for women experiencing domestic violence, and co-facilitated Batterer's Treatment Groups. I assisted survivors through the legal system, to obtain restraining orders against their perpetrators, as well as filing for divorce and/or child custody. I have also provided crisis counseling and intervention to survivors of sexual assault, and am certified in the State's 45-hour mandated training in providing crisis intervention and counseling support to persons who have been touched by both domestic violence and sexual assault.

In 2005, I enrolled at California State University, Long Beach, to obtain my Master's Degree in Social Work. After graduation, I obtained a position providing case management and intensive therapy for an Adult Full Service Partnership Program, working with individuals with severe mental illness, a history of homelessness, multiple incarcerations and substance abuse. While I learned a lot from this position, I felt it wasn't the right fit for me. In 2008, I obtained a position with hospice. This is where I found my passion for end-of-life care. I found meaning in assisting patients and families facing life-limiting illness. I became an expert in Death, Dying and Bereavement. I am a Certified Bereavement Counselor, and I have provided individual and group grief and bereavement support, and assisted individuals and families through the process of dealing with chronic and life-limiting illness. I am trained in Healing After Loss, a support group curriculum, for individuals grieving the loss of a loved one.

I come from a strengths-based perspective, in that I believe all individuals possess the necessary talents, abilities and coping skills to face their problems, and it is my role to assist and coach my clients in accessing those strengths to solve their own problems, achieve their goals, and increase their self-awareness. My focus is person-centered, including Carl Rogers' belief that therapists need to have, "Unconditional Positive Regard," for their clients. I utilize brief and solution-focused therapies, mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I have experience assisting persons with anxiety disorders, depression, low self-esteem, Bipolar Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, relationship issues, parenting, coping with life changes, and persons recovering from spiritual and religious abuse. I also use Breath Work, Guided Imagery, Relaxation Techniques and Mindfulness, to assist my clients in reducing their anxiety, and increasing their ability to focus on their goals. I tend to use an eclectic approach with my clients in therapy, and attempt to tailor my treatment for each individual, as much as possible. I am excited to be able to offer my skills in order to provide therapeutic and healing services to you!

I have been told that I am empathetic, compassionate, accepting, non-judgmental, and funny! I believe humor can get us through many of life’s challenges. I lean towards being more direct in my approach with my clients, but with the understanding that I am creating a safe and open environment, in which they are able to explore and process what ever issues and challenges they are experiencing. While I am a spiritual person, I am happy to work with you whether you have a faith, no faith, or a different faith than mine. I believe one’s faith and spirituality are a source of strength, that I will access, should you feel comfortable. I am looking forward to working with you, and to assisting you on your journey to become a healthier, more complete and happier person!

(My preferred pronouns are she/her/hers)

I love the Dodgers (Go Blue!), U2 ( I still haven't found what I'm looking for), and Star Wars (May the Force be with you!)

“Cindy” has been a blessing to me. She is a great listener, responds thoughtfully and timely, and has given me some great advice. She’s also helped me dive deeper into issues surrounding my anxiety, stress, work and personal relationships. When I first started working with Cindy I tangibly felt anxious, frequently. With her help, time, and specifically introducing me to grounding techniques, I’m very optimistic about my path. Thank you Cindy!

Cindy is compassionate, wise, attentive and fun. She has great empathy and has been a wonderful support to me. I am experiencing issues with an aging parent and she’s been there every step of the way.

Cynthia has been great to talk to. She's been wonderful in hearing out my concerns, asking thoughtful questions, and holding me accountable for what I've stated I was going to do.

Cynthia has been a hidden gem in the rough of 2020. She has been able to create a safezone via an unconventional platform; which speaks volumes on the type of therapist she is. I've been to therapist before where I have just felt like a timeslot. However, Cynthia invested her time and energy on actually getting to know me. Cynthia's strong communication skills creates a bridge of trustworthiness and compassion that allows one's inner soul to open in a non judgmental place. Cynthia has become one of the most positive influential people in my life because she challenges my views and perspectives that have kept me in a stale comfort zone for too long. She has been able to seamlessly identify my issues and collaborates functional steps to help me fine realistic solutions. My emotional intelligence is learning how to walk and Cynthia is there to childproof the room to makes sure it doesn't get too hurt in the process. I came to BetterHelp with skepticism of what it could really provide for me online, little did I know I was going to venture off to being a more wholesome person.

Cynthia has been so easy to talk to! She takes time to really understand where you're coming from so she can offer great advice. The most comforting thing is she is a real person who really cares.

Cynthia listens to me, hears me and acknowledges my pain and what I am going through. She has already been incredibly helpful and asks a lot of questions to get at the heart of my pain and what I am trying to accomplish in therapy. I look forward to seeing her and her helping me more. She is also always response, fast and empathetic. She is helping me, which is what I need.
