I am a Clinical Counselor licensed in Maryland and Washington DC with over 11years experience working as a Psychotherapist and Bereavement Counselor. I work with clients with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, low self-esteem and loss of a loved one.
My counseling style is warm and interactive, and I strive to meet you where you are in your experience. I believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion, and I don't believe in stigmatizing labels. I am curious and if you have questions, I support you to develop information and resources which will support your efforts to feel better.
My approach combines person-centered therapy with techniques from solution-focused, humanistic, psychodynamic and rational-emotive counseling and when appropriate, I use body-centered techniques. I will work with you to refine your coping skills, support you as you build self-esteem, and empower you to be the best you can be. I am here to help, whether you need a few sessions to get back on track or if you wish to engage in a longer-term change process. I will tailor our dialog and treatment plan to meet your unique and specific needs and look forward to learning what you are struggling with, your concerns, and your goals and how you imagine your future.
It takes courage to seek a more fulfilling and happier life and to take the first steps towards a change. If you are ready to take that step I am here to support and encourage your self-agency.
If you focus on hurt, you continue to suffer.
If you focus on the lesson, you continue to grow.
I look forward to helping you find your way to holding the "and/both "of life and ultimately experience happiness and fulfillment.

An amazing service.
Cynthia is an incredible therapist and has changed my life for the better. I leave every session in a better place than when I went in. She's the best!
Cynthia is truly exceptional.
Cynthia is amazing and has helped me through a very difficult time. I appreciate her and all her insight.
Working with Cynthia is easily one of the best decisions I've made this year. She is funny, kind, interactive, and holds me accountable for the necessary work in my quest for healthy mind set. I recommend her without reservation!
She is very kind and helpful. She has been very willing to accommodate my crazy schedule.
Cynthia is very friendly. She is great at helping to establish goals and finding applicable ways to reach them. These goals include life goals but also the general goal(s) for the session! She enhances my way of thinking about current situations/circumstances. Cynthia helps me feel empowered and accountable for my outcomes while diving deep into underlying feelings and at times, reservations. She is also able to take abstract thoughts and concrete them to explore opportunities for more conversation. My first time seeking counseling has been successful with Cynthia!
Cynthia has been really helpful and supportive. She listens well. I've suffered from depression since I was 19 and I've had a lot of therapy. I can tell Cynthia is a professional and knows what she's doing. BetterHelp did a great job matching us. I think we'll make a good team.
Cynthia has helped me through some difficult times recently and always responds when I reach out. She provides me with a wealth of resources and tools that are very useful on a daily basis. I'm very thankful to have her in my corner.
Cynthia Swan has been a delight to work with these past few months. I have had several therapy experiences where I felt like the person didn't really understand me or my concerns, so it was incredibly refreshing to feel truly seen and understood by a mental health professional. Her work is strongly empathetic, and her warm personality makes her very easy to open up to. I highly recommend her.
Cynthia is absolutely wonderful! I would definitely recommend her to anyone who is in need of help! She is amazing!
Cynthia is very sweet and encouraging. She never makes me feel like my problems are too silly for us to discuss together, and she’s never demeaning in any way. Sometimes I change from topic to topic quickly, but she keeps up, and she maintains a good balance between listening and giving advice.
I signed up for BetterHelp during a time of "existential angst" about our world and my place in it. After describing my present state, BetterHelp connected my with Cynthia Swan and it was a perfect match from my perspective. Cynthia is an excellent and empathetic listener and provided the kind of perspective and encouragement I needed to look at my issues in a healthy light. After a month of sessions, I felt that I had gotten the kind of insights I needed to move on with renewed vigor.
I would highly recommend Cynthia and appreciated the flexibility of this platform for sharing in both a live audio/video and offline messaging formats. It was efficient and effective. BetterHelp indeed!
