I am a clinical social worker with over thirty years of experience and am licensed in both Iowa and Minnesota. I have a Master of Arts degree in Counseling from the University of illinois and a Master of Social Work in Clinical Social Work from the University of Iowa. I have worked in a variety of clinical settings including primary healthcare, in-home, inpatient psychiatric hospitals, residential facilities, corrections, and outpatient counseling centers. Since March of 2020, I have offered counseling services online and have become certified as a Clinical Telemental Health Provider. I have become quite comfortable and familiar with online counseling.
My clinical interests include, but are not limited to anger management, depression, anxiety and panic, stress management, grief and loss, divorce recovery, and abuse issues. I primarily use a cognitive-behavioral approach in counseling. This approach is based on the idea that our thoughts, i.e. what we say to ourselves about ourselves, about others, and about the world around us determines the emotions we have and what we end up doing, that is, our behavior. We can learn to identify and then change these thoughts so that we begin to enjoy improved relationships and an increased overall satisfaction in our daily lives.
I work to form helpful relationships with people that include caring, genuineness, warmth and empathy. I'm a real person with counseling knowledge, interest and experience that I bring to the counseling process. My purpose and desire is for the people I'm working with is for them to be able to obtain what they are hoping to get from their counseling. I strive to be both "professionally human" and "humanly professional".
I would very much like to work with you to make the improvements you are looking to make in your life and invite you into that process.

Really enjoy connecting with Dan regarding the current struggles I’m facing. He continues to help put things into perspective and gives me tools to help navigate the more important items to focus on, which is usually myself. I definitely feel heard and valued during our sessions.
Helped me see a new perspective on life and live it.
After trying many different places and therapist, none of them have compared to Dan Bannister. He dove right into the core of my issues and has helped me figure out solutions to living with and improving my situation.
Dan has been amazing. I have not left a single session feeling like I didn’t use my time wisely due to Dan’s incredible ability to guide the conversation to what I’d like to talk about next. Even when I feel all over the place or scatter brained, I don’t feel pressured or stressed because he asks relevant questions and helps me get to the bottom of what’s bothering me. All around it’s been a great experience.

I was hesitant to work with a therapist. Dan was highly recommended. I am so glad I started sessions!
Dan is a wonderful person to talk to. He is compassionate and validating. He is a councilor with a Christian based approach, but I had asked to leave religion out of our conversations, and he always respected that request. I never felt judged by Dan, only listened to.
Dan is amazing! He is gone and above and beyond in helping me. He is amazing.....
My first experience with a therapy was very positive
Dan and I were able to connect almost immediately. He has a warm and friendly demeaner. He is a Christian therapist; however, we have not brought the bible into the sessions unless I mention it. This is just how I like it. Thank You Dan!
Dan has been a huge help. He's a great listener, empathizer, and offers really useful advice. I'd recommend him to anyone!
Dan has been a godsend. His calming demeanor and ability to listen, then help walk me through a solution has changed my outlook on my future. He’s exactly what I was hoping to find when I joined BetterHelp.
Dan has been great support in my first experience using therapy. His wealth of knowledge, advice, and natural understanding has helped me get back on track. He has been a perfect fit for me!
Dan has been an incredible help and support to me as I struggled through the process of healing from narcissistic abuse, and adapted to an enormous life transition. His understanding and experience with just this kind of situation translated into his being validating, compassionate, patient and insightful at every turn. His recall of my challenges, our discussions, and the players in my stories from session to session was remarkable, and comforting. I always felt better after our sessions, and will always be grateful.
Dan had a marvelous sense for understanding unique needs. He translated detailed concepts of behavior and discipline into relatable examples. Each session was self-directed by me, and Dan went with the flow of information without “skipping a beat”. I was extremely grateful for his skill and knowledge. Together we move me forward!
Easy going, helpful, knowledgeable, has many different tools and ways of looking at problems and solutions. Glad to work with Dan
Dan is a calm, kind, caring person.

Dan is a great guy he understands and he’s very nice
A helpful counselor who really listens.
Dan is incredibly easy to open up to and relatable. Through just a handful of sessions I’ve found very tangible value that I think is helping me make positive changes in my life. From the start I was comfortable speaking to him which has enabled me to go deeper than I’ve been accustomed to with other therapists.
From the perspective of a late 20’s Male, Dan is a great therapist, and very easy to get along with. He has been quite helpful in our limited time together so far!
Dan is a great listener with a lot of wisdom
Dan is a caring, empathetic who has lots of great personal and professional experience. He responds in a timely manner and has lots of great resources to share.
I've been working with Dan for a few weeks now, I can't believe how much better I feel in such a short time. I sought counseling because of a few small things I wanted to explore - and in that exploration, I have learned really practical techniques that have been so helpful for me. Our sessions have far exceeded my expectations, and I am so thankful.
Cool guy and understanding.
Very helpful and understanding, he really listens and gets straight to the point of what could be happening and gives so many tools to cope and live with certain problems.
Dan has been very responsive and helpful. I feel respected and heard in our sessions. He's a great support for me.
