People come to therapy for many reasons, including feelings of anxiety and depression. I try to do what I can to create open communication so that we can start to create goals and work on removing obstacles. I want this process to be worthwhile and something where therapy isn't seen as a bad experience. I try to give people tools so that I am essentially working myself out of a job! I work with warmth and non judgement to create a safe environment so that you can talk about all of your concerns and ask any questions.
My counseling style has been described as warm, blunt, and with a sense of humor. I usually ask many simple questions, because I want to help people reach their own conclusions. I believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion, and I don't believe in stigmatizing labels. I also feel that it is important that people know all of their options before they make decisions. My approach tends to be a cognitive behavioral modality. I will tailor our dialog and treatment plan to meet your unique and specific needs, since I see counseling as helping people help themselves.
I have a broad range of experience, from an inpatient hospital setting to counseling in the community. Because of this variety, I have experience with many issues or concerns, including trauma, depression, and anxiety. I am an EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) therapist, working towards EMDR certification. EMDR is a therapy that has evidence behind it as an effective therapy for trauma. I am personally biased towards EMDR because trauma is so common. EMDR is not traditionally done in an online setting. I am willing to help people process trauma with EMDR, but it would have to be done in live sessions. In general, I do tend to see things through the lens of how trauma can impact us. I am also trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT); I tend to gravitate towards CBT methods in my work with people because of the research that shows how effective it can be.
I try to respond to messages as often as I can, which means that I am typically responding 2 to 3 times a day. But the more people talk to me, the more I respond on here since I check it so often. It may be one of those simple questions, but I try to respond whenever I see something new (which means some people hear from me a lot every day). Even though I do respond often, I don't have the ability to always immediately respond. This means that if you need consistent immediate assistance, a crisis call center or face to face counseling is more appropriate for you.
I have a decent availability during weekdays for live sessions. I do what I can to accommodate people, but I am willing to refer if my availability for live sessions does not work for people. I want to help people see counseling as a positive experience, even if that is with a different counselor than myself.
