About Me

Hello, my name is David. I have two adult sons, Jonathan and Samuel, who live on their own. I have been married for 18 years to Marybeth, my best friend. Both of us are clinical therapists. She works in a clinic setting and I have the privilege of working with BetterHelp as a sub-contractor. I recently celebrated my first year with BetterHelp. I do have a license from New York Education Department office of the professions. I have learned that there are many states and international countries that honor my State Licensure. Each and every day has turned into new opportunities and solutions that derive from the members who are referred to me. Mind you, I am very humbled by those I met over the past year. Before my time with BetterHelp, my primary work load included working with other organizations and a secondary private practice that is called Rejoyce Child and Family services. The website is rejoycepeople.com that, I offered to others and learned from them as well. Most of those I have worked with had a history of living on the fringes of society.
My approach in providing therapy is to view Mental Health from a 360 degree perspective. Our thoughts, feelings, behaviors and relationships are multidimensional. The simplest approach is developing the skills and coping strategies to accomplish what you have control over. That is followed by learning those limits that one has no control over. Lastly, in developing the mindset to know the difference between both. The reference is the Serenity Prayer.
I come from the understanding that many caring and well meaning people asking themselves "Whatever did I do to deserve this." That thought followed by a comparison of yourself with others. Many times we compare our limitations with someone else's strengths. An innovative approach has to do with accessing others strengths to assist you in a solution focused approach. That places your strengths that are in addition with other's strengths. The quote I like is that "Nobody has it all together, but together we have it all."
Three hundred sixty degree therapy is all inclusive and comes with the understanding that we don't live in silos and isolated from outside influences. The Covid Pandemic has interrupted so many people and has caused irreversible damage. However, it has also provided an opportunity to adapt, develop and envision alternatives that offer solutions.
My past training and experiences have included multiple populations. I focus on each individual as if they were the only one during our time together. Areas of expertise are across multiple arenas in life. Those with challenging life experiences, others experiencing anxiety, depression, and even others not knowing where to start. I place a high value on relationships and families. Times when a relationship has met up with challenges is a starting point for growth and building a more deeper and meaningful relationship that uses differences as opportunities that reduce blame. I love to say finger pointing has one finger pointed at another and three pointed back at you. It sometimes becomes a difficulty paying attention our individual parts we played in the issue.
I believe in what the youth and young adult population has to offer and contribute to the here and now as well as inspiration and hope for the future. At times the is a conflict in families based on a version of rigid thinking or one's belief that everything rotates around them. Breaking that barrier takes three hundred sixty degree thinking.
Equal with relationships includes those who are misunderstood and not listened to. Others who see themselves as different and being separated and singled out due to their difference. Then there are so many "bullies" that use their power and authority to hold others hostage or feel "less than." Those subject to the Bullies require a certain type of attention and empowerment. Agreements and relationships are dependent on mutuality not a power difference.
Regret and guilt are dirty and vulgar words in my dictionary. I can better describe that when we meet. I am always taken back when I meet with Widows or Widowers who lived a long life together with grief and loss and so many questions of what to do now. Others who are either entering the job market or leaving to begin retirement. Lastly, I make it a point to not ever get surprised. I am so grateful to be in a position that identifies the problem and works toward an opportunity and solution that may be all encompassing or just the first step.
Early in my career, I learned about Insoo Kim Berg. I found her practice so very fascinating. I recall my own personal history of conflict and intense microscopic analyzation of the problem. I could remember my father being so upset with the Human Services and Professionals who continued to ask the questions over and over again. He would say that he could ask the same questions. "I want to fix it." My dad would often say. Of course, our family was considered as growing up on the "wrong side of the tracks." My grandfather grew up with 14 siblings with a third grade education. Dad and mom had an eighth grade education. Four of the six of my siblings graduated from high school and I was the only one to go on to, initially two years of college and eventually earned my master's degree in Clinical Social Work. I learned about Insoo Kim Berg and also attended some of her in person trainings. SHE MADE SO MUCH SENSE!!!!! Following is a YouTube clip in her words, what she does and how she got there. Welcome to a similar practice when we meet up with each other. Thankfully, I was able to add to and develop my practice based on more than thirty years of training and experience. I first became interested in Human Services in 1980 while holding a Bachelor's Degree in Theology. I started my profession by volunteering at two setting, one in Troy, New York and the other in Western North Carolina.
Early on in my younger years I spent a short time in the Seminary, studying for the Catholic Priesthood. The words are "a short while." That was the springboard in reaching the all inclusive and real world that is all inclusive to all humanity. I disciplined myself through the years to eliminate any prejudice or judgement. There are only a small parcial of the population that may be deemed as evil. Choices are made whether they are good or bad, and the dignity of humankind is a value that remains of high value to me.
That is enough about me. Please take a load off and meet with me. Each individual and family system is very unique and deserving of the dignity and respect due them. Do you find it difficult in your marriage, are you doing all you know to parent that difficult child or possible blended family. Whether you wear the shoes of the child/ adolescent or the parent including stepparents. Then there are so many caregivers who are doing the best they can and it is not good enough. Adult children of parents who reached senior or disabled one way or another. Alcohol may be a monkey on your back or you have been living in a family with alcohol or substance abuse problems. I don't have all the answers. My life experiences and profession date back to 1980.
Parsons Child and Family Center has been a beginning foundaton working with children and families. who experienced exceptional barriers in life. I moved on to a rural Community Mental Health Clinic in Schoharie, New York. I learned that the component and services for youth and their perspective families were limited in the respective services they needed and became part of a development to include that population. I went on to Schenectady County and encountered the Juvenile Justice System. I learned quickly that the crisis of youth that were at risk of being placed outside their homes was critical and the outcome of youth going into the foster care system was out of control that included those who were placed in residences that housed youth for multiple reasons. I spent time working in a local Community K-12 school offering therapy. I was embedded through The Alliance for Better Health in a hospital setting. There I was responsible to assist Medicaid patients to develop a discharge plan with subsequent planned services. I started Rejoyce All People as a private practice since 2006. The organization facilitated services for those who were marginal and fell through the conventional safety nets.
My LCSW-R degree was earned from the School of Social Welfare in Albany NY at the University at Albany.

I am also reimbursed by most Mental Health Organizations including Medicaid and Medicare. I remain committed to our service members and subscribe to Military One Source. At BetterHelp, I am so excited to offer therapy to the Active and inactive Veteran Community.
I graduated with a Masters Degree in Clinical Social Work. I hold the NYSED, New York State Education License to practice social work. That license affords me to treat other states and countries who honor that license. I belong to the National Association of Social Workers, National Alliance for Mental Illness, Association for Educational Education and associated with a number of organizations such as SAMSHA, a government agency for Alcohol and Substance Abuse, Child Trends, an organization that offers Best Practices and research in treating youth and adolescents. I have collaborated with multiple local and civic organizations and believe it is important to provide a "Wrap around Service" that treats the whole person and or their respective families. I am certified to provide mental health therapy for those struggling with Multiple Sclerosis. I belong to the National Association for Multiple Sclerosis.
ognize NYSED licensure that includes other continental and intercontinental countries. I graduated in 1995 from the School of Social Welfare, State University of New York in Albany. I have over 30 years experience in my profession that includes special needs populations that include Multiple Sclerosis, other Developmental Disabilities as well as Traumatic Brain Injury.
I work with youth that are gifted or have special needs, their respective parents as well as adult children who provide caregiving. I am trained in trauma based therapy, marriage and families included blended and non conventional. I offer therapy for depression and anxiety with personal and professional experience. I have experience with multiple service delivery organizations including family court, forensic treatment, members who identify themselves in the LGBTQ population, “at risk populations,” those experiencing various life changes, grief and loss, trauma, and the list goes on to includes you, the reader of my profile????
My therapy style is warm and interactive. My sessions are based on the member's strengths and focused on solutions. I believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion. Many of those I have treated say to me, “You are different!” I believe, encourage and revere the values and beliefs my subscribers possess. My personal values and beliefs focus on Humanity and all its diversities. My competence has its source in Theoretical and Live Experiences. I follow evidence based and best practices and utilize the NASW ethical practices. Some may wish to have a short subscription of therapy and others may want more lengthy subscriptions. Since I started with BetterHelp, I have effectively discharged numerous subscribers with the understanding they may always come back. I have continued with 15 longer term subscribers who remain encouraged and hopeful in the direction they are going.
I understand it may be difficult to reach out and ask for support and assistance. Asking for help is considered one of the more important coping skills. No matter your reason for reaching out, I am more than pleased in working with you. The importance is “Working with You.”
Welcome and I look forward in joining you. :)

David is a very patient and experienced therapist. He managed to help me organise my thoughts on serious and deep issues while giving methods to improve myself as well in the future. He would readily respond to me and take the time to reach out to me to ensure I was coping well. I would definitely recommend him to anyone considering him as a therapist.

This therapist has taken a very dark chapter in my life and is helping me glean valuable lessons that I haven't had the power to just simply think my way into. Betterhelp's journal centric platform helps me piece together entire parts of conversations outside of the direct CBT time and it's helping me get through a very sensitive portion of my complex life.

He is very experienced and has a wide variety of skills. David is a great listener and he asks the right questions to get you thinking. Being able to deal with past trauma without reliving any of it is invaluable. It has really help me come to terms and understand things from a different perspective.

We exchange ideas and stories, and that works very well for me. Talking is preferable to medications

Thank you David for your Kindness and Respect which when going through cold times feels like a fireplace of warmth and light. It has been good working with your expertise, skills and mind set. I didn’t feel so alone when you lent your virtual shoulder to cry on. You have stuck with me on my main goal - to learn and grow from my difficulties which I am choosing to see as fertilizer for the spring garden; even suffering has its seasons. I am glad to continue and move forward! Thanks for the help.

David Maurice is fantastic, he takes the time to listen and give feedback that is true to feeling. I previously did not stick with counseling before David and he has changed my perception on that. I was genuinely surprised with how well this app placed counselors with people.

Work with me!
