When more of the same is not good enough, we change or suffer. Sometimes we feel stuck in our relationships, jobs, or Life. We often re-think the "same old story," maybe regret, guilt, trauma. I believe that you are smart and if you could "get out of your head", you would. This is the fault of the brain, which needs rebooting, as a car needs a tune-up. Engaging in a counseling relationship is this tune-up for the brain. Therefore, my highest intention for you is for a clear, mind where you can see possibility and opportunity.
My knowing the entire story of your past is not necessarily what will help you, in fact, it may do further damage to re-live events that no longer exist; therefore using symbols, colors and other sensory modalities to reach your unconscious brain gets to the root of the disturbance. Each person is different in their needs so if it is helpful to you, I certainly want to hear it. If not, we will start where you are now and proceed.
Once the need for change is identified and someone has decided to pursue counseling, half the work is done. I have noticed that people think about and search for a counselor, make an appointment and then cancel it. I feel that they have come so close to having a partner, me, or anyone else who appealed to them, and then changed their mind. If only they would give it a chance, it can be life changing, as it has been for me.
For me, joy is internal and soul - deep, whereas happiness is based on external circumstances that can change. Fifty percent of happiness can be attributed to genetics, per research, 10% of happiness is circumstantial (new car, engagement, a bonus at work) and 40% of happiness is within our power to enhance. (The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor) I believe we all deserve to be joyful and understand that happiness may come and go. If we are strong in our core, we can withstand any circumstance.
