About Me

Hi and welcome to my profile page.
If you are reading this page, you are probably looking for emotional relief and are trying to decide if I seem like someone who could help you. I am glad you are doing so because the relationship between the therapist and the client is very important in order for healing to occur. I would like to tell you about myself, my past work experience, and my approach to counseling.

I have two grown kids that now live with my husband and me in Houston due to circumstances related to the pandemic. I must say that having my kids at home is definitely the silver lining of this challenging time. I received my Bachelor's and Master's Degree from the University of Houston in 1989. I have worked as a stress management therapist in a psychiatric hospital, the Director of Mental Health America of Fort Bend County, the Executive Director of an organization for people living with a bleeding disorder, and recently started my own company, Mental Health Matters Too.

My approach to counseling has a few guiding principles. By the time people seek counseling, they are in a great deal of emotional distress and their lives feel very stressful. It is my job to break the problem down into manageable pieces so my client can gain clarity, self-understanding, and the ability to deal with it differently. Secondly, I am aware that most people are looking for short-term counseling as opposed to a drawn-out analysis of their life. My approach to counseling involves learning new concepts that either work to resolve the problem or cope with it in a way that restores personal peace and happiness. Finally, I believe that everyone has the ability to heal and the potential to create a better life for themself and those they love.

Debbie has been a blessing for me in this season of my life. I leave our counseling sessions feeling as though a weight has been lifted. Starting to feel a bit more hopeful & positive about my current issues. Thank you!

In 2017, after leaving a severely abusive relationship, had someone mentioned seeking therapy, I'd laugh and say, "I'm fine, I got me." Which I did and it was the truth. I found my own way of healing and went through many periods of self-discovery. However, it took me well over 3 years to realize that maybe I DID need help with my mental health and that maybe I wasn't really "okay." Of course, COVID made finding a therapist impossible, so I ran across BetterHelp - BEST DECISION EVER.

I was matched with Debbie, who ultimately gave me the sense of confirmation I needed that IT IS OKAY TO NOT BE OKAY, especially after all I had experienced. She understood my need to not be seen as a victim or survivor. She provided me with solutions to work through the flashbacks and panic attacks. She reinforced my resiliency and explained that trying moments did not mean I was back-tracking. Sometimes, she simply just listened & reassured me that she will always be there, and she has even upon completion. I cannot be more humbled, grateful, enlightened, and empowered by my therapy experience.

I am so grateful to have the opportunity to connect with Debbie and I highly recommend BetterHelp to anyone. Thank you immensely to the creators of this service and all the incredible counselors providing through it, such as Debbie!
