My name is DeWanda Gichemi. I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology from Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia and my Master of Social Work Degree from Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, MI. In 1996-97, I actively participated as a Team Lead/Field Coordinator for the Grand Rapids Service Corps-Michigan’s AmeriCorps Program. While serving in AmeriCorps, time was dedicated to community rebuilding via Habitat for Humanity, neighborhood rebeautification, and educational excellence by implementing tutorial programs for disadvantaged youths within the Grand Rapids community. As a strong advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness and education locally and abroad, I provided HIV/AIDS case management services in Durban, South Africa to South African women affected by HIV/AIDS in 1999.
With an expression of empathy and compassion, I believe that “a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” Helping individuals to lovingly heal in order to improve the quality of their lives is my humble contribution to the world. To promote change, I utilize various evidence-based treatment approaches which includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Psychoanalytic Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Attachment Therapy, Mindfulness, and Strength Based Perspective.
My valuable experience and expertise are with Mood Disorders (Depression/Bipolar Disorder), Anxiety/Panic Disorders, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Stress Management, Relationship Dynamics, and Life Skills/Coaching. Working with women (notably women of color) challenged by the effects of Perinatal Mood Disorders (i.e. Postpartum Depression and/or Postpartum Anxiety) are my specialties. I have practiced in the field of Social Work since 1991 and provided counseling services for over 22 years with a diverse population of adults.
I am exceedingly committed to meeting individuals “where they are” as well as to challenge them to overcome any stumbling blocks along the way while encouraging self-compassion to establish emotional and mental well-being for healthy living.
Thank you for making this courageous decision to seek support. I look forward to connecting with you.

DeWanda is a light to the universe. I have been in and out of therapy my whole life; this is the first therapist that I have truly connected with, felt heard, felt seen, and have seen drastic improvements in the quality of my life per her guidance. If you’re ready to really do the work and hear some hard (& good) truths, DaWanda is there for you.
DeWanda has been extremely helpful in processing things from my childhood to my current life now. She pays close attention to my needs and helps me to think about the bigger picture. She is very understanding and takes the time to get to know all parts of your life. She remembers names and things you may have previously told her. I am beyond thankful for her services.
In my very first session with DeWanda I was very relieved and impressed with how she made me feel safe. Her spiritual insight was very important to me, as well as her knowledge of dealing with a narcissist. This has been a very stressful and unexpected revelation and her professional compassion came through loud and clear. I am looking forward to her guidance on my healing journey!!
DeWanda is so wonderful as a therapist! She really listens to me, so I really feel genuinely heard for the first time in a long time. I am grateful for that.
But I also like that she speaks up to suggest solutions to the issues that I'm facing. She gives me a lot to think about, and this is helping me heal.
The talking and listening on both sides, is what really works for me. I'm so thankful for her help!
DeWanda was a wonderful listener, and gave feedback to validate my concerns. She gave practical advice on what to consider for our future sessions and brought up aspects that I had not considered. I would definitely recommend DeWanda! She has much knowledge about postpartum mental health concerns.
DeWanda is a thoughtful listener and smart with her useful advice.
Though I haven’t been working with DeWanda for that long, she has already helped me so much! She’s very motivational and uplifting. She has given me a lot of good resources to help me challenge my anxieties. She challenges me to take care of myself and do the work to become the best me I can be. Very grateful for her!
DeWanda is great so far. She listens and understands why I am reaching out. Love working with her so far.
