About me

BetterHelp Capsule Biography

I have been a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in Pennsylvania since July 2015. I completed a Masters in Professional Counseling in 2011. During training and post graduation, I have worked as a psychotherapist in 3 different acute care settings, treating people in crisis. The treatment experience I've gained has been invaluable for professional development. I have learned deeply about suffering, emotional regulation skills, and recovery.

The fundamental skill that I share with psychotherapy clients is to deeply listen to their life experiences. I carefully use questions to clarify my understanding of clients' lives. I work to help people understand that they are not broken or defective. As Carl Rogers said "The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change." From understanding and acceptance, I accompany clients on a journey of self-exploration and psychological growth.

I integrate mindfulness practices from meditative traditions, emotional regulation skills from Dialectal Behavioral Therapy, psychodynamic ideas of self, and cultural context into my approach to treatment. I engage in dialogues with my clients to explore where in their lives they feel pain, numbness, anxiety or being stuck. The goal of our work together is achieving psychological growth to overcome limitations. A more satisfying life is achieved via greater psychological skill and creating healthier behaviors.

I enjoy working with people with a variety of life challenges and diagnoses. I am particularly skilled at working with depression, anxiety, life transition issues, vocational struggles and religious questions. I have developed family systems knowledge via formal and informal instruction because our closest relationships are often also a source of pain. I enjoy exploring family systems issues and discussing with clients how they may be more effective in relating with loved ones in order to create better relationships.

To quote Albert Einstein: "The significant problems we have cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them." I hope to hear from you and to explore how we may work together to help you improve your mind, mood and actions.

I have returned to counseling with Doug after a few months break, and he has been his usual helpful, empowering self. He gives me brilliant reading material which has helped me navigate through some very challenging times with my family. I'm getting stronger and more skilled through his interventions and insights. We have a lot in common, which has been very useful for me moving forward and I highly recommend his counseling services to anyone who is in need.

My experience with counseling with Douglas is very positive. Douglas helps me to reflect on my problems I share with him and offers sources like books or articles that might help me get a better understanding of the issues we discuss. He brings topics and experiences from real life to help me get a perspective. Last but not least, Douglas checks in, in case some longer time passes and I have not come back to his last message, and he does it in a gentle and kind way simply asking whether I am okay and assuming that I am keeping busy in my life. I feel listened to, and supported and inspired with Douglas being my counselor. I'm really happy that Douglas is my counselor. Thank you, Doug!

Doug has been extremely helpful in "filling in" while my talk therapist was out for the holidays, and I have actually found that he has much more to offer me.
