I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Supervisor. I have over 25 years of counseling experience working with children, teens, adults, families and companies. I believe for counseling to be effective, both the client and counselor must be actively involved in developing counseling goals and assessing progress. Efforts to make necessary and positive changes require work, both in sessions and out of sessions. Some changes will occur quickly and easily but more often change requires slow, deliberate and repeated efforts. The benefits of counseling might include such assets as gaining insight into your problems, developing coping skills, attaining resources and changing yourself so that participating in life’s daily activities generally becomes a more positive experience.
Every individual is unique. The counseling approach that may be taken regarding your concerns is based on the information you provide and my assessment of your emotional, mental, physical, social, spiritual, economic and career characteristics. Being open and honest with each other is important in order for appropriate counseling goals to be established. A trusting working relationship between counselor and client is also important.
Different methods of therapy will be used as it pertains to the client’s individual and, family needs. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is one approach that’s often used based on thoughts. CBT is based on thoughts influencing how an individual feels and behaves and less on external situations. Short Term Solution Focused Therapy is goal oriented and meant to focus on the present and the future and less on the past. Most sessions will focus on self-awareness, choices, setting goals for the present and future, problem solving, assessing strengths and needs, limitations, acceptance and change. Outside of sessions, there may be homework assignments such as journal writing, reading, communicative exercises and other methods of self-discovery and progress. The process and content of the assignments will be followed up in counseling sessions. Whatever method we use; just know I have your best interest in mind.
