I am a Licensed Psychotherapist also known as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist located in Sunny Southern California.
I've been practicing therapy for over 16 years and work with adult individuals and couples.
My experience is working with issues around stress, anxiety, depression, life transitions, grief therapy and relationship issues.

I provide a safe space to explore and process the feelings and issues you are experiencing. It's not about getting rid of your feelings but rather learning how to manage them in a more healthy way; learning how to have your thoughts and feelings work together rather than against each other! It's usually best to work through your issues rather than ignoring them or trying to push them aside. I want to help up you live a more joyful life and experience fulfilling relationships.

My style of therapy would be best described as eclectic. It's based on the foundation of cognitive-behavioral theories and then adapts to each person's unique needs utilizing my experience, empathy and compassion to help you move forward in life.

For those subscribers that are interested, I also focus on the mind-body connection, which includes learning how to live more in the moment. Living more in the moment, rather than being stuck in the past or worried about the future, makes life all the more peaceful and joyful. Mind/body connection exercises include deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation (tensing and releasing different muscle groups), guided imagery and mindful walking ( a more active form of meditation). All these exercises can help achieve the body's Relaxation Response - physically relaxed and mentally alert. It's what I like to call, "Calm Energy."

Research has shown that the Relaxation Response helps in the Reduction of pain, stress, anxiety, fatigue, irritability as well as reducing blood pressure and the stress hormone levels in our bodies. It's been shown to help Increase energy, motivation, productivity and improve decision-making abilities.

Although we won't be working face-to-face, you can still learn and benefit from these exercises through instructive emails (telephone sessions may be an option as well). I will also provide follow up emails to see how you are doing and where adjustments might need to be made.

I had a really nice experience through Betterhelp and very much enjoyed my correspondence with Emily Schwimmer. She was patient, understanding, and offered thoughts and questions that guided my reflection, as well as useful techniques for moving through emotional stuff that comes up which can occasionally act as a block. The method by which Betterhelp offers counseling was new to me, but I came with a very specific concern that I wanted to work through and felt like I was able to move through it in a short amount of time. Would recommended both the service and Emily!

I wanted to take a moment and share how wonderful and attentive Emily Schwimmer is. She has an obvious passion for helping others. I know that I am not her only client but she still makes me feel very important and valid. Emily has never passed any judgement and has effectively helped me identify various emotions. In fact, she has helped me identify issues that I had not realized were negatively affecting me. At times I don't feel like talking, or I just get busy, but she always makes it a point to check on me during those times.

I have really valued Emily's help, advice and support. Without it I am sure that I would have returned to a dysfunctional relationship. Emily has helped me to remain strong and work through my emotions rather than giving in for immediate numbing of the strong emotions that I have been feeling connected to my break up. She has helped me to understand that I don't always have to give in to my feelings and they don't have to hijack me. The fact that I could text on a night when I couldn't sleep helped me a lot, as that was when I was most vulnerable. This was mainly due to different time zones. I would highly recommend Emily as a counselor.

I cannot thank Emily enough for helping me with my struggles in life. I appreciate how she empathizes and connects with me. I did not know that it was manageable to get through depression and anxiety until I had my sessions with Emily. Emily is very kind and empathetic. She really goes to the root of the issue without making you uncomfortable. Her techniques to overcome stress were really helpful for me. Sometimes you need a solution to your problem but sometimes all you need is a listening ear/someone trustworthy to whom you can open up. I found Emily trustworthy and easy to connect with. I've only been working with Emily for just under a month, but I've already learnt so many new coping techniques and exercises, and for the first time I've really opened up about things, I feel like I could tell her anything and there would be no judgement. I am in a very confusing time in my life. I wanted to try on-line therapy for convenient purposes, plus it felt affordable.

Emily has been working with me for a few weeks now. She is so responsive and positive. I love that she gives me exercises and helps to reassure me that my mixed emotions regarding my separation and possible divorce are normal. She's helped me to feel there might be a way to process all of this.
