Greetings! I'm so glad you've taken this difficult but important first step of reaching out for help. My name is Gerry Watson, and I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a mental health therapist from Alaska currently living and working in Tennessee. You can see more about my education and experience by clicking on my profile above. In the 16 years that I've been working as a mental health therapist, I've worked in a variety of settings: residential, outpatient, and online both in Alaska and Tennessee. The type of therapy I do is called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), but to explain this more simply and clearly I call it Reality-Based Therapy. I help my clients see the truth and reality of what is actually happening around them, reject ideas that their mind makes up, stay focused on what they need to do in the present to succeed, not reliving the past or trying to predict the future, and gain the life skills that will allow them to succeed in their relationships, at work, and in life.
Over the years, I have worked with a lot of different people who have suffered from a wide variety of mental health and life challenges, and I've been able to assist them in getting better and moving forward with their lives. I am experienced in working with clients dealing with depression, anxiety and stress, grief and loss, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), issues with past trauma and abuse, substance abuse, behavioral addictions, anger issues, life stage transitions, relationship difficulties, family problems, and career difficulties, as well as other issues. I've been able to help get through the most challenging times of their lives while healing and building a new life for themselves that is the way they really want to live.
I have a long track record of success helping people overcome a wide variety of mental health issues, relationship problems, and challenging life circumstances. I'm confident I'll be able to help you too! Let me be the person to help you clarify your personal goals and show you how to achieve them despite the very real obstacles you're facing. I can help you overcome things that are holding you back so you can become the kind of person you really want to be and have the kind of life you really want to live. I have been working with Gerry for about a year. He is a very experienced therapist with a wealth of knowledge. He is great at answering emails quickly which was our primary form of contact (due to my difficulty in being able to schedule a live session). However, he is also great over the phone as well and I was sorry I waited so long to schedule a "live" session. However, he also won't lie to you to make you feel better -- after he gets a good sense of your situation he is not afraid to tell advise you on some of the difficult changes you will likely need to make in your life, in order to have a positive outcome. Sometimes these things are not easy to hear as a patient but if someone doesn't point these things out, then it doesn't get your thinking about what you CAN change in your life to make things better. I think we have made good progress in the past year, and I have appreciated the chance to work with Gerry.

Gerry helps me work through difficult life circumstances and minimize my triggers in the midst of them.

Gerry is an excellent therapist! He is easy to talk to and is extremely knowledgeable about many aspects of mental health. I never leave a session without learning something about myself and my behaviors. Gerry is truthful and asks questions that really get to the core of issues that impact my life. I highly recommend choosing Gerry Watson as your therapist!

I really appreciate how far I've come with his help. I'm still not 100% but the effort he shows me and how he explains things work really well for me. He has various articles and techniques he shares. Gerry is really great at what he does.

Very pragmatic and intelligent. Gerry has a solidity to him that many therapists lack. He is honest and invested.
Written on Aug 14, 2019 after therapy with Gerry for 3 years and 11 months on issues concerning stress, anxiety, addictions, relationship issues, trauma and abuse, grief, self esteem, and depression
Some of the toughest months I can remember having, Gerry helped me through. I wasn't always the best at keeping up, but he'd always check in and ask what was on my mind. That alone was enough for me to open up. I never felt like I got anything but sincerity and honesty during our conversations, some of which I still revisit as a reminder.

Gerry is very attentive and helpful. He is super consistent and quick with responding, and he is even proactive with checking in when I haven’t responded. It’s clear that he cares a lot!
Written on Jul 04, 2019 after therapy with Gerry for 3 weeks on issues concerning stress, anxiety, addictions, trauma and abuse, and self esteem

Gerry is a great counselor who listens to what you have to say and has real practical advice that isn't sugar coated. I liked the memes and extra content he sends out. Overall, a good person to talk with.
Written on Apr 03, 2019 after therapy with Gerry for 4 weeks on issues concerning depression, stress, anxiety, and relationship issues
Gerry sends inspirational quotes, funny memes, and helpful articles that I look forward to on a daily basis. I get nervous about scheduling counseling sessions, but he hasn’t put any pressure on me, while still letting me know he hasn’t forgotten about me. He was able to divulge new information about myself and increase my self-awareness in the first session. There is an even back and forth in communication, and it’s nice to both have a conversation along with his helpful insight.

Gerry has been exceptionally professional, knowledgeable, and caring. I have only been working with him for 3 weeks and his advice has been very beneficial. Even though it is still early in the process, his style seems likely to be a good fit long term.

Gerry's life experiences and overall knowledge is so refreshing. He was able to provide great insight and helpful tools immediately. Even without live sessions, his impact in what he shares is very much appreciated!

I’ve found Gerry to be a thoughtful and responsive counselor. I particularly appreciate how he regularly reaches out to me, because I am such an introvert if left to my own devices. He’s encouraging me to make small, steady changes to improve my life and deepen my satisfaction with it. So far, this feels like a really good fit.

Amazing counselor! He has truly helped me so much from the short time I have been on here! Since I have joined he has reached out to me at least once a day and sometime more than that! I was very skeptical at first, but it is well worth it!

When I came to BetterHelp, I was suffering with depression. I still am. With the help of my counselor Gerry Watson, I am learning how to overcome obstacles that I never thought I would overcome. I am becoming a better me.
Written on May 01, 2018 after therapy with Gerry for 2 weeks on issues concerning depression, and trauma and abuse
Gerry truly understands the dynamics of domestic abuse and personality disorders. I’ve gone to a couple of local therapists who didn’t seem to “get” the depth and complexity of these types of abusers. It’s a relief to have someone to talk to who makes me feel validated.
Written on Apr 30, 2018 after therapy with Gerry for 2 weeks on issues concerning family, trauma and abuse, and self esteem
Gerry is extremely experienced in what he does, and that shows, especially in helping someone like me with ADHD. He's very persistent in keeping track of my progress and helping me, and his primary goal is always seeing me make progress in getting better; not drawing out the counseling length unnecessarily. He has a blunt, matter-of-fact coaching style in some cases, but even in the most uncomfortable heart-to-heart advice, he never comes across like he's picking on you or being blunt for no reason; it's always at a kind of tough-love moment when you need to hear someone just tell it to you the way it is, and I can appreciate that.

Gary has been a great help in a very short time frame. He has been very responsive, takes the time to understand, listen and provides very well thought out responses. He's been honest and direct while offering practical advice. I signed up for a month after my week trial and plan to continue using Gary and BetterHelp. In many ways, it's been a lifesaver for me. My schedule doesn't allow time for face-to-face counseling so BetterHelp is a great alternative. It's also allowed me to interact with my counselor almost daily which is something I would not get in a more traditional setting.

Beyond his skills and qualifications, he's very human, reflective, ready to change his perspective. Enabling you to enable yourself to find comfort in times of pain. Works with you on what you discover that can be changed, if , when and how you want it.
Written on Jan 30, 2017 after therapy with Gerry for 4 days on issues concerning depression, stress, anxiety, relationship, and sleeping
Gerry is a very empathetic person, a careful listener, and is very well-educated and knowledgeable both within his field and in many things beyond it. This depth of knowledge allows him to meet you at every turn, recognize the things that are important to you, and make him far more understanding than most people are capable of being. He is very accessible, and makes himself readily available for phone conversations and text chat; he is also very realistic and honest, which are qualities I especially appreciate. He is exceptionally skilled at hearing what you do not say, and seeing what you do not show him; this means that he is able to quickly recognize what your most important issues truly are, and what you most need help with, which allows him to guide you towards discovering those same things on your own. He is truly gifted. I have not trusted anyone with anything since I was a very young child, but I have found over time that I am able to trust Gerry which for me, is nothing less than a miracle. --Ellen G.

Written on Sep 22, 2016 after therapy with Gerry for 1 month on issues concerning depression, stress, anxiety, relationship, trauma and abuse, intimacy-related, sleeping, self esteem, career, and bipolar
I've been in and out of therapy for most of my adult life and I never really followed through with any of my therapists to get to a point that I would consider "wellness." With the BetterHelp counseling structure, I can work with my schedule on a flexible basis and I can follow up with my therapist at convenient times for me--no worries about missed appointments, 'no show' fees, or hustling to get there in time. Additionally, I live in a rural area and access to quality mental health is hard to come by. This format allows me to work with a competent, qualified therapist without having to drive an hour and a half to the appointment.
Gerry is terrific. He pushes me to look at the things I say for their validity and usefulness in my life. He also stays after me to stay in touch with him by asking me questions and checking in with me. He encourages me to open up about the things I'm experiencing so that we can discuss my reactions and thought processes. He is competent and insightful and I am thankful to the BetterHelp website for putting me in touch with him.

I really enjoy working with Gerry.. He's a kind and caring individual and really thinks out-of-the-box compared to other therapists I have talked with or seen. He has been very attentive to my needs. I also had a voice chat with him that went very well and I could tell over the phone what a warm person he is!!

It has been a significant experience to learn how to handle my ADD and Depression from a person who shows care and disposition to help. I am still taking the therapy to ensure my recovery, but I had felt heard and appreciate by Gerry. His encoragement for a person like me who is not an English native speaker and struggling with the loneliness and hardship of moving to a new country is much appreciated. He brought me hope and reminded me I am an important as person for my love ones, even in the worst circumstances.
Kuddos! We keep talking :)

Although I am not comfortable judging whether someone would be a good therapist for someone else, I can say that if you really need and want help, Gerry will walk that path with you and give you honest and thoughtful responses to help clear the way.
