My name is Grant Tomey and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia. My counseling approach is based upon the premise that, above all, the relationship that you have with your counselor is of utmost importance. Without this strong foundation, which includes a great deal of trust and mutual understanding, progress will be limited. My first goal is to make the people I counsel feel like I understand them and the issues that they are presenting. I accomplish this through a relaxed, down-to-earth, and nonjudgmental approach. Empathy is the bedrock of my clinical practice, and this ideal is demonstrated in the level of attention I provide each one of my clients.
Once good rapport is established, working from the Person-Centered approach, I utilize a combination of Solution-Focused and Cognitive-Behavioral techniques to bring my clients to a place where they are able to find their own answers. While counseling can be an immensely rewarding and enriching experience, no one wants to have to rely on it indefinitely. Through your work with me, you will get closer to becoming your own expert on yourself, your world, and your relationships.
I received my bachelor's degree in psychology from West Chester University in 2012 and my master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from Old Dominion University in 2014. For the past 7 years, I have worked with all age groups and populations, and feel comfortable providing care to individuals with mild through more severe mental health issues.
Personally, I enjoy spending time with my family (including furry creatures), cooking, working out, and playing music. I believe we can all benefit from taking time to better ourselves, and counseling is an integral part of that process. I look forward to talking with you, getting to know you, and becoming a part your experience of getting to know yourself better.

I have tried many counselors over the last 2 years. Every time I quit and ended up getting very little to no true help. Grant has changed my life within 2 weeks and after using this service as a free trial and seeing how much he did for me in 7 days i happily paid for the service moving forward. Amazing counselor, amazing matching system and website. Keep up the great work. You guys are helping tons of people in need! Thank you!!!
I worked with Grant over several weeks to get a better understanding of my stress and its cause (other than the obvious). He introduced me to a number of resources that really helped me become aware of thought patterns that were contributing to my stress. In addition, he asked me questions and gave me assignments that helped me think through matters. He is very responsive, listens well, and is solution-oriented. His "about me" very much matches the real Grant. I highly recommend him!
Grant's feedback to my messages are both practical and emotional. His empathy is articulated well in his messages and his intent is clear as I know how hard it can be be in written messages. Grant adjusts his methods as he gets to know you or as life circumstances change. He provides insight and knowledge that you otherwise might not have seen. He maintains a good balance between my thoughts and my feelings without neglecting or diminishing either one. The therapy here is in the knowledge that someone is there reading your messages and concerns and it is not just going into the ether. Knowing that there might be a reply back to your concerns or even good moments you just want to share can be up lifting. There are those of us out in this world that just do not have that in real life and there is nothing wrong with getting your needs met even if you are paying someone to do just that.
Grant kept my goals in mind and checks in with tools I can utilize to make it happen.
Excellent communicator and professional.
Very helpful and showed a solid grasp of the issues I was facing. Offered excellent advice.
Grant is a very understanding and friendly person. I can almost talk to him like I am talking to my journal. He tries to understand the very core of what I am going through and respects my feelings. I feel respected and valued in his presence. Thank you, Grant, for making me feel valued when all I felt was devalued.
Grant is extremely thoughtful and respectful. He is a great listener and has given my techniques and strategies that have enhanced my life. I am learning how to value myself and I am working through my issues at my pace. Grant supports me, especially when I need it most. I truly value his work and guidance.
