About Me
Hi and welcome to my BetterHelp platform. My name is Theresa Otu, a Licensed Professional Counselor in Wisconsin, “America’s Dairyland.” My hunch tells me that if you are reading through my profile, you are searching for a buddy for your self-improvement journey. If my guess is right, I want to commend you for thinking about improving your life. The Greek philosopher Heraclitus said something many years ago that I believe is still very true today. According to Heraclitus, “Change is the only constant in life.” If you believe this saying like I do, it follows that we should welcome opportunities to change. In other words, we grow by trying new things. I am an open-minded counselor; taking a non-judgmental stance when working with clients. I believe the solutions to our problems lie within us. As a result, my goal is to help you identify your strengths and encourage you to use them. I enjoy cheering, encouraging, listening and supporting my clients.
I am big on self-care and encourage my clients to do the same. This concept is important to me because I often hear clients say they feel guilty taking care of themselves. I strongly believe that when I take care of myself, the quality of care I give improves.
I worked in two middle schools holding different positions. After earning my master's degree in counseling and following licensure I changed career. I have extensive experience working with individuals and families on issues such as ADHD, anger management, anxiety, bipolar, depression, relationship difficulties, work/life balance concerns, trauma to name a few. I have participated in numerous on-the-job trainings and attended many counseling focused conferences.
Even though I espouse different treatment modalities such as CBT, client-centered therapy, mindfulness therapy, motivational interviewing, narrative therapy, solution-focused therapy, strengths-based therapy, I do not use one exclusively. Instead, I utilize an eclectic approach when deciding which strategies will work better for each particular client. I encourage the client to become very active in sessions. Doing this affords them the opportunity to understand the modalities in consideration. This way, they can choose wisely. It also improves buy-in. I use different treatment approaches because no one strategy has all the ingredients for success. Each approach has strengths and limitations. Using an eclectic approach has proven successful in my experience. In other words, I take useful ideas from different modalities to achieve positive results keeping in mind the case being considered. I always remember that therapy is not one size fits all.
I believe I can be of help to you. I usually focus on past successes to bring about positive changes. Being open-minded allows me and my clients to consider every viable options. Doing this increases optimism and self-esteem. I hope you decide to work with me.

Theresa truly listens, understands, and doesn't judge. She explains difficult concepts in an incredibly clear way, often using examples that illustrate the concept.
Theresa has been very helpful. When I'm having a tough time I think what would Theresa do? It has come in handy many times for me since meeting her. She has no judgement but is not afraid to call me out when I'm in the wrong. She does it in the most sincere way.
I wasn't sure if there was going to be a barrier at first because of her accent but by the 3rd session, I was quite surprised at her grasp and understanding of my feelings far beyond any the language indifference. She's very intelligent, kindhearted and very easygoing as a conversationalist. I've seen her only a few times and she makes me feel relaxed and understood.
Theresa has been fantastic. She's responded quickly and was so helpful to talk to. I'm hoping to talk to her again soon.
She definitely has the feel of a friend more than a counselor. I do enjoy chatting with her and she is very supportive.
Theresa has a good heart and soul and is very uplifting. She’s not pushy but suggestive and honestly tries to understand your side and make you feel it isn’t abnormal.
