Hi! My name is Hope Merrill, LCSW, and I have been a therapist for the past six years working primarily with adult clients. I have also been a teacher, janitor, chicken plant worker, fast food worker, battered women's advocate, tax preparer and other things over my adult life which have given me a good bit of experience outside of the therapy room. My personal approach to therapy involves helping people recognize their power to find their own solutions to problems. As a therapist, I have found that most people already know, at least on some level, what they need to do to make their lives better in the present and help themselves make peace with the past. Often, though, they are worn down by automatic thoughts and painful emotions that have been repeating in their minds for years, some version of not being good enough, not being strong enough or being damaged beyond help. They feel that they are fighting against overwhelming forces of nature instead of their own thoughts and feelings and believe that there is nothing they can do to change these patterns. Many people depersonalize their future selves, thinking and acting as if that self was a stranger they will never meet in a country they will never visit instead of the self that they already are with a little more time on the clock. My goal in therapy is to help people find their way to be kind to their future selves, get in touch with the values that are truly important to them and reimagine their lives as they would like to live them.
I use both “top down” (talk therapy) and “bottom up” (mindfulness) approaches to help clients recognize and recalibrate their automatic patterns. I use techniques and approaches from various evidenced based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, Schema Therapy, Brainspotting and EMDR.

Hope is beyond amazing. She listens to me and let's me feel comfortable. I have had many fears of talking to someone about my problems, but it's like talking to a person who can understand where you are coming from. Even if it's a fail you think you did, she is right there with her words that can carry you to the next moment. Her point of view one things are not dated, they go with what's going in in your life. She is a wise, kind, smart, and so easy to talk to. Helped me realize my goals and dreams for me.
Hope has listened and responded to me in a very positive way and I believe in the long term view all will be good in my life in counseling with Hope.
She’s been awesome and I would highly recommend her!
Excellent and accurate assessment of my needs! 10/10
Hope is great listener and provides great insight. I would definitely referral her to my friends and family.
Hope helps me to navigate so many different aspects of my life that are touchy without ever overstepping or minimizing anything that's going on. I would recommend her to anyone looking for a counselor with a delicate way with words and a perceptive and kind heart.
I have enjoyed the short amount of time I’ve had with Ms. Merrill. I knew from her list of jobs from all corners of the market that she has quite the handle, and knowledge on life. She has listened and validated my feelings where needed, whilst also asking me good questions to help me articulate my thoughts and reactions to the situations I personally deal with. I recommend Ms. Merrill with the highest appraisal, especially for people who need a good listener. People who need someone to help them understand their own feelings through thoughtful analogies and positive affirmations.
Hope , is very professional, caring and very helpful in all , you can tell she cares and puts a lot of time and thought into her work.
I've truly enjoyed my sessions with Hope and I greatly appreciate the time she spends in responding to my concerns and the expertise she offers.
Hope is such a great person!!! I loveeee her being my counselor. She’s so sweet, respectful and kind. I’m so glad I got matched with her. Wouldn’t have it any other way!
Hope, and I have been working together for about three sessions and I feel that she has a great understanding of where I am. She does not judge, but she does ask hard questions and makes me think. I feel like the time that I spend with her is never long enough. She is a great therapist and excellent listener/hearer.
Well,I've only Had Hope as a counselor for a few months, but I don't think I could find a better one than her! She listens and is able to give me ways to keep me grounded. And with all my mental and medical problems, i know im a handfull! But with her unlike all my other councilers ive had, this one is only the second one i actualy trust!
Hope helps me to understand myself so much better. I've learned her methods are used to assist me in understanding what I already know about myself, I've come to realize my analytical, innovative capabilities don't need validation. I appreciate how she remains unbiased, while still making sure I'm learning things from her as well.
Hope has been a great sounding board with no judgment passed, yet constructive insights on more effective living. I would definitely recommend her services to anyone needing assistance.
She’s so great! If I’ve been busy and unable to respond she reaches out. I feel like she is truly beginning to crack me open and work with my on understanding myself.
Hope has been amazing for me. I struggled at first finding the right fit through BetterHelp, but she has been great! She listens carefully, provides amazing insight, and follows up with me. I feel like I have a safe place.
She does respond and is an excellent counselor
Hope’s counseling was a sorely needed restart to my healing process after some less than stellar sessions with previous counselors. I feel truly listened to and that I’m being treated as an individual and not as a textbook problem to simply regurgitate techniques upon. She’s helped immensely in restoring my confidence and self-worth and affirming the progress I’ve already made.
I gave hope a really tall order of getting to know me and help me during a very challenging and complex phase of life that was only for a couple of weeks. But she did what no other therapist before could and got me to open up quickly and addressed my concerns, and now I'm doing great!
I have been very impressed by Betterhelp and by my therapist, Hope! She has helped me work through ways to manage my anxiety and ways to cope. I have felt a big difference in my anxiety since starting my sessions with her!
Hope has the care, attention, and thoughtfulness you need when seeking help. I haven't felt any judgement from her and she is really easy to talk to. I would really recommend her services.
Hope has been very kind in our video sessions. She listens and offers constructive feedback. I am gaining trust in her as time passes.
