Welcome to Better Help! You may be wondering how this works and whether it would be right for you.
My name is Jack Richey. I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Illinois. I earned my Master of Social Work degree, specializing in Interpersonal Communication and Change from the University of Iowa.
I founded and directed an outpatient mental health clinic. I have worked on an inpatient behavioral healthcare unit. I had a private mental health counseling practice. I retired in August of 2021 after thirteen years of providing out patient mental health counseling services in a psychiatric wing of a local clinic under the direct supervision of a psychiatrist.
I've worked with individuals, couples, and families who have had to address a variety of issues. These have included employment difficulties, depression, anxiety, stress, anger, family and relationship issues, self-esteem, divorce recovery, and parenting problems.
My counseling style combines Cognitive Behavioral, Family Systems, and Solution focused approaches. I do not have a “cookie cutter” or “one size fits all” approach. Each person is unique with specific needs. I try meet clients "where they are".
I believe we can all grow through challenging experiences by increasing self-awareness. Sometimes another person who isn't directly involved can offer a new perspective. Having additional support can guide people through a difficult situation when they feel stuck.
People all want to be able to share their personal experiences, be accepted, and feel understood. I believe it's very important to be open-minded and non-judgmental when people share their personal stories or experiences.
It takes courage to seek a more fulfilling and happier life. Your life and your goals are important. If you are ready to take that step toward change, I am here to support, encourage, and empower you.
I look forward to working with you!

Being a practical thinker, and visual learner, Jack was able to give me amazing worksheets and tools for my mental toolbox to cope with my Depression.
He was always responsive to my messages and I could feel a genuine interest in my mental well being in every interaction. I used to be a person who never considered going to therapy until my situation became serious, but I'm glad for an amazing therapist and an online environment as it gave me the freedom to look back at the conversations and notes Jack and I took.

He helps me to allow God to direct my path and it awakens me who I am and purpose.

Jack is kind, thoughtful, funny, and never judges. He is an incredible listener and is fully engaged. He knows when to step in with just a suggestion, or when to share an example from his own journey. I came to Jack with a long list of therapy goals and my life is so different today than just a few months ago. If you match with Jack, count your blessings.

I have absolutely loved my sessions with Jack. It’s his calmness and understanding, but most importantly his religious approach to the sessions that made me open up. I loved that he sometimes shares elements of his life experiences that I could relate to and gain some insight from. It’s definitely helped seeing things from a different perspective. He has a beautiful aura and I saw that in our first session. I am so thankful for his help!

Jack has been such a great help to me. He listens and understands, but he goes beyond that by helping you set up a plan of action and helping you create goals to better yourself. He is compassionate and knowledgeable. Therapy/counseling was new to me and Jack made it not intimidating, and really encouraged me to open up and dive deep into my life and the things I was dealing with. Jack is great...the number of times I'm asked for feedback from Better Help is not. If someone is not doing their job, trust me they will let you know about it. People don't want their therapy to feel and operate like a Best Buy or a customer service survey after a lengthy call to AT&T might. And if they do, they are wrong.
