About me

Greetings and Welcome!

A bit about me: I am a licensed professional counselor in Missouri, as well as a certified school psychologist. I’ve worked with people of all ages and walks of life over the course of a career that spans almost 25 years. I’ve worked with clients battling anxiety, depression, poor confidence/ self-esteem, AD/HD, parenting difficulties (including children with special needs,) and relationship stressors. Over the years, I’ve served as a mentor and supervisor for many mental health professionals in training. I’m also an adjunct professor.

Personally, I am married with two children. I enjoy playing music, hiking, hanging out with my family, and running in my free time.

As your counselor, I view myself as a partner, a guide, and a motivator. Improving one’s life situation takes work and can be a complex process. It’s hard to do it alone – and that’s where I come in. I utilize a client-centered approach that integrates elements of cognitive-behavioral, solution-focused, mindfulness, and biblio therapies to help you reach short term goals and begin to take on larger challenges.

The first step is always the hardest – but also the most important!
I look forward to our time together :)
-James

I’ve spent the last 7-8 years , spending thousands on my mental health only to end up back where I was, hands down , the best councillor I’ve ever had , even from across the Atlantic

James Shieffer is extremely insightful, he really helps me focus on the facts and truth of my experience and reality. He doesn't make excuses for me or let me make excuses for myself. I've had several sessions with him, and he is always patient and open eared.
