About me

My name is Jenna Cohen and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the Commonwealth of Virginia. I have been working at a community mental health agency in Virginia, working in both outpatient and emergency/crisis counselor positions and serving people from all walks of life. I have worked with individuals of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds and families who have been living with serious mental illnesses, anxiety, depression, life changes, parenting difficulties, stress, grief and loss and the everyday ups and downs of life. Particularly becoming a new mom myself in the past few years, I'm interested in helping support women during times of transition, such as pregnancy and postpartum and navigating issues that can arise from these new roles.

I would describe my approach as warm and empathetic but I also like to challenge my clients in a way that can create growth and change. I believe people are seeking and searching for growth when they start a counseling journey and it's my goal to help them get where they want to be. That being said, I don't believe I am a magician or have all the secret answers but I believe counseling can be a way for you to clear blockages and hurdles that might be in your life. It is my belief that a life hurdle, while difficult in the present, can be a very effective tool for growth and change in one's life. I utilize a client-centered, humanistic, holistic approach to help people and families keep their goals first and forefront in therapy. I utilize an eclectic blend of therapeutic tools and depending on the client will incorporate acceptance-based behavioral therapies (ABBTs), Existential Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Solution Focused techniques and Mindfulness skills. I believe no one person or family are alike, and strive to meet the people I serve at the place where they currently are, and help build off of strengths from that starting block. I do believe that the development of self-awareness, deepening meaningful and substantial connections with others, and improving emotional resilience creates a space change, growth, and healing to take place. Together, you and I will determine which type of approach would be best. If we discover that another source of therapy may benefit you, I will discuss this with you and refer you to what may be most helpful.

I earned a BS in Sociology and a BS in Psychology from Virginia Tech in 2009 and went on to earn my Masters Degree in Counselor Education from Old Dominion University in 2012. I have been married for 8 years and have two young children. I was a former collegiate and professional athlete as well, and can understand the extreme pressures that can come from our various roles in life, whether they are stemming from home and/or work environments.

I want to first tell you how brave you are in seeking help and support- you've done the hardest part by just showing up! I would be honored to walk alongside of you in your journey.

Jenna makes me feel seen, validated and heard. I’ve not only been able to acknowledge and work on my boundaries but also my relationships with people in my life through those, and I’m grateful for her ear and mind to guide me through it!

Jenna is a wonderful councilor, she allows you to talk through the things you are personally grappling with. She does not put forth judgement nor hard and fast solutions. Rather she helps you talk through and think through the things that are bothering you in an effort to truly get to the root causes of what is bothering you and to identify areas that you may need to personally work through.

Jenna offers a variety of tools to help you explore your own psyche to include: worksheets, Ted Talks, book recommendations. Should you have the opportunity to work with Jenna, just go with her on it, work through the worksheets, watch the TED talks, and read the book. It all somehow comes together to aid you in feeling better, understanding the things that have caused you distress, and tolls for how to cope with these things when the remerge in your life.
On a more personal level, Jenna is just a genuinely nice person and genuinely cares about YOU and wants to help YOU!
