About Me

I love helping others overcome life's challenging dilemmas. As a licensed psychologist, I thoroughly enjoy working with adults with various sexual orientations, genders, cultures and religious beliefs. My training as a Counseling Psychologist emphasizes the importance of multiculturalism, social justice and diversity issues. My approach to therapy is working in a collaborative manner with my clients to help them learn and integrate techniques into their life that will help them in achieving their treatment goals. As a psychologist, I believe in empowering my clients by helping them understand their authentic self as well as any external factors that may be causing them distress. I aim to create a place of safety, respect and comfort in order for my clients to freely express themselves. My counseling is strongly influenced by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I provide evidence-based treatment in a safe and non-judgmental way to facilitate recovery from emotional hurts and unhealthy habits. I have specialized training in the treatment of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder, particularly with sexual trauma and military trauma. I am an LGBT affirmative counselor. As a researcher, I focus on LGBT issues, immigration and acculturation concerns and Latinx identity. As a dedicated mental health professional with a generalist training, I have a passion for helping adults with a wide range of mental health concerns. My style is warm and engaging; I aim to create a relationship which facilitates growth through collaboration, respect and compassionate challenge.

I really enjoy talking with Dr. Merrifield, it’s been quite a journey of self exploration and learning to better understand myself and how to effectively deal with my issues both personally and professionally. I have no reservations and recommending her to others.

Ugh, words wouldn’t even be able to describe the amount of helpfulness she’s given me within these last couple of months of talking. she’s helped me work through issues I’ve been struggling with for years. 100/10 would recommend!

Dr. Merrifield makes so easy to open up! This is my first time doing counseling as an adult and I am normally a closed off person, but she helps with giving me a variety of prompts to guide me. Can’t say enough wonderful things about her! Truly so grateful to have her guidance!

It’s been more than 20 years since I actively sought support even though I knew I desperately needed to find someone to talk to. More than anything I wanted to find someone that I felt comfortable with and got me and that’s what I feel I’ve found with Dr. Merrifield.

Somehow BetterHelp checked all my boxes. Polyamorous, bisexual, works with the VA so she knows how to help me with my nesting partner’s PTSD. She really gets me and my situation so I’m not so busy worrying that she just “won’t understand” and we can get down to the nitty gritty of what I actually need so I can do better in my life. She’s a superhero.

Don’t hesitate to work with Dr. Merrifield!!!!
I can’t recommend her enough! I’ve been working with her for about 2 months! The girl I was 2 months ago vs the girl I am now are drastically different! I do however, have more room to grow but I know she will be there every step of the way! I credit all of my growth to Jennifer. She’s the counselor you can ugly cry to during your whole session and feel zero judgement. She’s the one who will guide you into the right direction without any pressure at all! She’s the one who will teach you your self worth/love. She will help you get through past traumas. She’s so sweet and supportive. She’s so relatable. She just understands everything. I also love how respectful she is of me and my feelings. I clearly cant say enough about her. My sessions with Jennifer are the highlight of every week! I’m beyond grateful for her. 10/10 recommend! She’s the most amazing human being ever! LOVE HER!

Dr. Merrifield has been of tremendous help to me. She's not only knowledgeable as an expert in her field, but also a genuine and kind person. She has a knack for striking the perfect balance between holding me accountable to my values, but also making me feel safe & supported. This has allowed me to reach a high degree of honesty both within & outside of our sessions, which has improved my life. Needless to say, I unreservedly and enthusiastically recommend Dr. Merrifield.

My work with Dr. Merrifield has been so helpful. Starting the therapy process, I felt completely out of control. In the past several weeks already I've been able to find much more peace of mind, reach some goals with her help, and I'm excited about the continuing process of working on some of these issues that I've been having. If I've learned this much so quickly, I have great hope for when I can be in the next several weeks. She is a great listener. Her input is so educational and applicable. I appreciate her work with me SO MUCH.
