About me

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Clinical Addictions Counselor in the State of Indiana. I have been practicing for over 23 years. I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky and now live just across the Ohio river from Louisville in Southern Indiana. I have the most knowledge and experience working with Anxiety, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety, PTSD/trauma, Depression, Stress management, ADHD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Intrusive thoughts, Grief and Bereavement, and Victims of Emotional, Physical, and Sexual abuse. I also have a good deal of experience in several other areas.
When working with clients I immediately try to put them at ease, so they feel comfortable opening up to me without concern of being critically judged. It's very important to me that the people I work with feel listened to, empathized with, understood, supported, and respected. I do my best to treat people the way I like to be treated. I also believe I connect well with and can relate to people from all walks of life, of all ages, all ethnicities, different sexual orientations, and with both men and women. Also, every person and every case (so to speak) that comes to me is different, which means there are aspects of the treatment approach that have to be tailored specifically to each individual. Therapists have to be good listeners, but we also have to be good teachers and coaches. The treatment modalities I prefer are Cognitive Behavior Therapy, this approach has been proven by research studies to be the most effective form of treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, as well as other types of issues. I also utilize Mindfulness/Relaxation, Insight Oriented Therapy, and Solution Focused approaches, and I teach the Emotional Freedom Technique otherwise known as tapping.
By taking the approaches described above, it is my intent to provide people with tools they can not only use to help get past whatever challenge/hardship they may be going through at present, but also to equip them with tools and methods they can continue to use as they go forward in life.
I'm looking forward to working with you!

PLEASE NOTE: With regard to how best to communicate: For the counseling/therapy process to be effective there has to be, in my clinical judgement, a direct person to person dialogue that can only be accomplished in a live session. Messaging is a good feature to have to communicate info in between and in addition to live sessions, but messaging (typing only) cannot effectively be used as an alternative for live sessions. I am writing this then, to let people know in advance that I cannot enter into a counseling/therapy relationship that is based on messaging only.
ALSO: This is a heads up for the good people who are in the Pacific time zone. I am in the Eastern time zone which means we are three hours apart time wise which makes scheduling very difficult. I do welcome, however, anyone from the west coast to schedule with me if the scheduling can be worked out. Presently I schedule my first appointments at 9:00 or 10 AM and my last at 4:30 PM EST, which translates to 6-7 AM to 1:30 PM for those on the west coast. Again, just an FYI! Jerry
