About me

I am a person who has devoted more than 30 years of my professional life to helping other people. I knew from the time I was in the tenth grade I wanted to be a Psychologist, so I have also been fortunate enough to fulfill a dream. I obtained a Bachelor's degree from Clemson University in the 80's. From there, I went to Southern Illinois University where I earned a Master's and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. My training included working with college students, people from the local community, and veterans at three different VA hospitals (in IL, TN, and FL). My first job was as a teacher and counselor at Clemson, where I was also an expert witness in trials for crimes including murder. Next, I worked as a staff psychologist and neuropsychologist at the Greenville (SC) Hospital System. I worked with people in locked psychiatric wards, therapy groups, and those in neurological, orthopedic, and cardiovascular rehabilitation. I starting a private practice in assessment and counseling that I have maintained for decades. Early on, I provided Employee Assistance for Bell South. I was, for years, the lead psychologist at St. Francis Hospital, where I worked in many capacities - crisis intervention in the ER, palliative care, physical rehabilitation, and in traditional psychotherapy with individuals, families, and couples. At St. Francis, I helped to create a clinic for children and adults with ADHD and related neurodevelopmental conditions. I taught at Greenville Technical College, where I was the Professor of the Year, and developed an endowed scholarship for students providing community service under my supervision. More recently, I have returned to a broad private practice, working with children (many with Autism Spectrum Disorder), adults in Vocational Rehabilitation, and Veterans. In the later part of my career, I developed expertise in assessment and counseling for various types of neurocognitive disorders ("dementias"). I am a consultant to Fertility Clinics, working with infertile couples, gamete donors, and gestational carriers. I am an All-American (2015) triathlete who also provides sports psychology services to fellow athletes. My career has been a source of great satisfaction and wonder, and I am excited to bring my experience and expertise to telehealth. I am eclectic in my approach, using evidence-based approaches to treating problems of adjustment, PTSD, depression and anxiety, alcohol abuse, and other diagnoses. Every person is unique; therapy is a process to find what will work for you. In these trying times of the coronavirus, we are all worried, tense, fearful, and dispirited. We are distanced and isolated from one another, and from the simple pleasures we once took for granted. However, we are human, and in our humanity we are able to discover and learn ways to adjust and to cope with even the most dire of situations and circumstances. We do this by working together. I would appreciate the opportunity to work with you -- to see if we are a good match, if telehealth is right for you, and if I can help you solve the problems you are facing.

I truly appreciate Dr. Hammond. I find that he is respectful, through, and so helpful. He uses techniques and verbiage in a way that is easily understood and considerate. He asks what goals I have each session and recaps in a consistent way.
