As a young adult during graduate school at Boston College in 2008 I began my social work/counseling career in a men's medium security prison in Massachusetts. There, I provided individual and group therapy to particularly vulnerable inmates/detainees, who were dealing with mental health challenges on top of their incarceration. After several years working in correctional mental health I transitioned into an outpatient counseling role in an outpatient detox center and provided support to adults in the community who were managing addiction on an outpatient basis.
Eventually, I opened my own outpatient psychotherapy practice in Norwood MA, where I built and managed a caseload of individuals ranging from teens to older adults, who were dealing with a variety of mental health concerns, stressors, or transitions. Here, I managed both the business and clinical aspects of counseling. I provided treatment to individuals managing depression, anxiety, mood instability, stress, relationship issues, low self esteem, poor confidence, parenting challenges, grief and loss, topics unique LGBTQIA individuals and life transitions including transitioning into adulthood, graduating from college, aging, and retirement. Additionally, I provided couple's counseling to partners preparing for marriage, managing parenting styles, or affected by infidelity.
While maintaining the private practice, I began working for the Alzheimer's Association MA/NH chapter as a memory specialist. In this role I provided telephonic consultations to individuals and families caring for loved ones with memory impairment or dementia. During a consultation, a caregiver/care-partner and I would review future planning, difficult behaviors, disease education and caregiver burnout. Sometimes, the individuals and families found my ability to listen to be the most valuable part of the service provided.
A relocation out of MA led me to begin providing support to individuals on a virtual basis. I find value in emotional support, validation, and a listening ear being easily accessible via a platform that so many of us use so frequently every day. With eleven years of clinical experience I am confident in my ability to provide support to individuals facing a variety of challenges. Additionally, I am comfortable making appropriate recommendations if I do not believe I am a good fit for a particular individual or situation or that one's needs may be better met in a different therapeutic setting.
My approach to connecting with individuals on a virtual basis will be similar to the approaches I have used in the past with face to face sessions with individuals and families. The challenges we face in life, ranging from daily stress to traumatizing events, can be difficult to deal with. Family support and friends can be immensely helpful, but at times we need an unbiased listener to help us see things clearer. Please allow me to be that unbiased listener to help you with whatever it is you are going through.
I am a solution focused therapist and can help clients develop creative solutions to their problems. I view the therapeutic relationship as a partnership that requires hard work and honesty from both parties.
Please allow me to help you cope with or reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, mental illness, pregnancy, a new baby, divorce, substance abuse, low self-esteem, and other obstacles you may face. Great listener , easy to talk to and has constantly provided me with great reading material in relation to my specific needs
Joelle has been helpful and making me think slightly different. I believe that she will be very helpful in what I am trying to acheive to become a better person, to myself and those around me.
Joelle continues to be an amazing resource for me. I've been working with her for so long now, it's comforting to know that there's someone who knows and understands me so well who is available to hear me out when I need it!
I have recommended BetterHelp and Joelle to so many people since I started this process. I really feel like (even in short sessions) Joelle is able to hear the things I am struggling with, pull out the root issue, and offer a realistic "baby step" type action that I can try to resolve it. No lie, BetterHelp and Joelle were the best parts of 2020 for me!
Joelle is great. She is a great listener. She is also very responsive via text messages in between sessions. Provides great support and feedback and wants to see you grow! She is very empathetic and works off of your strengths. I would definitely recommend her...and especially as a person of color myself I really wanted a counselor who is also a person of color who'd better understand my problems. Highly recommend!
I love her as my counselor. She is the first effective counselor I’ve ever experienced. She takes the time to listen to all my concerns and gives me tools/advice to deal with and face things to come. She’s very easy to talk to and she’s very consistent and timely.
Phenomenal. I owe my rapidly improving mental health to Joelle and our work. Thank you.
I can’t say enough good things about Joelle. She makes conversation so easy and is so empathetic. I wasn’t sure how natural it would feel using video therapy and messaging but I have been so surprised. She is easily reached and responds in a timely fashion. I feel like she really cares about me and has gotten to know me. I look forward to our sessions!
Joelle is a great listener and problem solver. She is very goal oriented and always seems to know the perfect items to supplement your sessions. She holds herself accountable to remember all the nuances of your last sessions to keep your current session on track. Would highly recommend her to anyone suffering from depression or substance abuse.
Joelle was a great counselor and helped me greatly.
Very polite and nice and understanding. Helps me a lot with the problems I’ve been having lately.
First therapist in a while to let me sorta just talk and manage to intuitively pick up on some things I miss. Awesome so far and very encouraging.
Joelle is awesome. Not only does she listen to me and helps me dig deep, but she actually has ideas to implement to solve my problems. She’s great!
Joelle is great!!
Joelle uses her knowledge in a thoughtful way to help me better understand myself. She gives me space and support without any pressure.
Joelle has been wonderful - a very helpful, thoughtful and intelligent therapist. I'm so happy that I met her, and I would recommend her highly. Thank you Joelle!
